Anyone know what this part is?
I was looking for the cargo net as it’s written in a thread where it would be. Well, instead of that, I found this gem. I’ve no idea what it is and did some google searches. Seems it’s some kind of draft vent. Wondering if it needs to be put somewhere other than the trash lol. I just got this car, so there’s random easter eggs to be found. Like, i found a air compressor cannister and some lug nuts under the rear cargo area. No money…yet.
Thanks in advance. |

Based on its 11 digit bmw part nbr ( 64229122453)…it’s #12 in the diagram below. The part number index indicates QTY of 2…which probably means there’s one on each side.
They are probably the covers over the vents that allow air to escape to the exterior when you close the doors. If there wasn’t a way for air to escape…the doors would be difficult to close due to air pressure inside the cabin. If you didn’t slam them hard, then the doors would pop back open (without the air vents).

Thanks qsilver. I will take a look to see if I can see if there’s one on each side. Should be, based on the diagram, somewhere near the storage panels at the rear (where the elusive, for me at least, cargo net would have been lol). Anyway, no problems closing the doors, so maybe it was a remanent of some job. In my mind, what a random piece…
Edit: You are correct sir. It was missing on the left side. There’s one on the right as well. Thanks. I was going to throw it out. Last edited by V i C; 01-29-2023 at 07:00 PM.. Reason: Update |

The cargo net is usually found on the left side tucked into the (black) styrofoam holders for the roadside flare and other stuff. If unused/undiscovered by previous owners, it will be in a sealed plastic bag. Since the net is black and the styrofoam is black…it can easily blend in and not be noticed. But you would also need to have the optional rail system in the cargo area.

Qsilver7 thanks i just took at a look. Nothing unfortunately. It might have been in that black styrofoam pocket in the picture I attached. (See below)
Chilled pics attached. There’s another one on the right below the fuse box. From top to bottom, removing layers. The final pic, you are looking bottom left at the base of the bin. It’s just a cover. Not sure it’s integral to the operation of the purpose, in my mind anyway. Except that it perhaps serves a purpose to create physical distance, so incase someone tried to shove a few pillows or something space occupying in there, it would maintain distance for ventilation. Anyway that’s my take, see pics. |

The air compressor is most likely your “fix a flat kit”. The lugs were more than likely removed in place of security lugs.
