How exactly is MPPK loaded into your car?

I'm trying to figure out what exactly is involved with the install.

It's OEM software so I'm guessing there is no need to remove the ECU.

Is everything done through OBD port?
What are the chances of BMW loaded differnt maps on there that can be unlocked by a coder (there's a member on here who had a coder install his MPPK, avoiding the dealer all together)
Possible to tweak some settings to get more power?

AFAIK, its all done via the OBD port. As for coding for more power, anything is possible...just be wary of possible warranty implications should you have a failure. I haven't played around with any coding on my F15 yet, but I'm sure there's a way to validate software, and if its been changed in any way. Having a major failure and seeing a denied warranty claim would be painful.

Unless the MPPK offers different level of power gains in different markets around the world i wouldn't imagine it will have a folder/file where you can just select higher/lower gains. Plus the MPPK is something very different in terms of how its coded to the car because it requires a special code and I believe you need to have access to Bmw's server via log in. Not hard to get but you still need to have the hardware/software/account to be able to run it.

Alan is correct.
In order for the code to be valid, the car need to be connected to BMW central server.
If it doesn't require the connection, anybody who knows how to work it can always get it done.
It has been proven with Nav update, which supposedly the same procedure.

Enabling codes or FSC codes are used to enable new features on the car, particuarly when they are software centric like MPPK. This allows bmw control over how the features are deployed.

So long as you have the right equipment to program the vehicle and the enabling code, youre good to go.

In the not too distant future, you will be able to purchase these upgrades via the idrive store and the vehicle will be programmed remotely. No trip to dealer needed.
