New Battery today

F15 is in for oil change (20K) and SA said they "have a lot of work to do". Looking at the screen it showed replace cabin microfilter, , recirculating air microfilter, and battery. I told SA I have no problems with battery or electrical just to hear the response which was vague. New wipers all around too.

and if you are planning on keeping the SAV, this is all included in the extended maintenance pkg for 6yrs/100k, a real value even at $2300

I didn't get extended warranty at time of purchase. And now since I plan on keeping long term, I'm thinking of the extended warranty. So that's 2.3k for another two years..

I got a refund on my Acura extended warranty just a couple days before trading it in. The car was only 13 months old so the warranty was obviously not in effect.

Does BMW do the same in the event you trade the car in before the extended warranty period begins?

On my E70 it was prorated based on total miles, not miles above the factory warranty. But I was past 50k miles, so not sure if it would be 100% refund if you had not reached the threshold.

Also, does the extended maintenance plan cover all costs of the 60k mile service?

YES! and remember to bring the SAV in at 99500 miles so they can do the 100k service at no charge.

I bought a '16 x5 a week ago and was offered extended maintenance 100k/6years at $2500. Still contemplating if it's worth it. I expect to be in 50-60k mileage range in my 5th year and probably 60-75k in 6th year. What's the average price to get 5th and 6th year services done (assuming a brake pad/rotor change front/rear.. in 5th or 6th year) I expect this to be about $1000-$1200)

Any inputs? TIA

is this battery replacement thing still only for the 50i model? I recall seeing something only the 50i's and X5M's have two batteries in the back.

No this is happening for all the X5's and X6's as well. Mine was just replaced a few days ago

I saw the detailed RO with prices. BMWNA is being billed $364.00 for the battery + labor. I doubt this needs to be changed on any regular basis, I hope.

Why does the battery need to be changed so early? Does it have anything to do with the car's electrical programming?

BMW's attempt at squeezing a tiny bit better mileage by using variable alternator charging. It is programmed to only charge the battery when coasting. That is a simplistic explanation... there are other variables, like if the battery voltage is low enough, the alternator should charge the battery regardless of the current driving conditions. Apparently the way they programmed it, combined with the huge electrical loads, both during engine operation, as well as before and after engine operation, did not provide adequate charging. It has been a problem especially for cars that see a lot of short trips. They can't just reprogram it because then they would have to recertify and restate the gas mileage claims.
