First oil change?
Hey guys... I assume BMW won't cover an oil change at the 1k or 1500mi mark, which I've done with every new car I've purchased. I'm at 1,300mi now and considering taking it in and asking to see the filter. Has anybody else eyeballed the filter at an interval earlier than the computer suggests? I'm assuming there are plenty of metal shards floating around and I've always tried to take care of it early. I don't need a scientific oil analysis... The eyeball test will do just fine for me.
Curious to know what others are doing... |

You better not see anything other than a clean oil saturated filter. If you see anything, take it back to the dealer immediately and demand your money back.

"Should be" nothing... Yes. But freshly cut steel naturally sheds it's shards when heated and cooled... With friction. I wouldn't be surprised if the very first oil change had some engine remnants from the manufacturing process. Granted, I'm not talking about chunks of steel...

I changed mine at a little less than 3k. Because like has been mentioned, I have always done a "break-in" change on a new car, and in any case, 10k or 15k is way too far to go between changes, even if you're not worried about the whole break-in thing. Turns out it keeps track of other things beside just mileage... How many short trips vs. long trips, how aggressively the engine is used, temperatures it operates under, etc. So in my case it's telling me it's due in 2400 miles. I have 6100 on it now, so the total it's calling for at first oil change will be 8500. It also says August. I bought it in November, but it was obviously built earlier in the year, so I'm assuming it is calling for first oil change in August because that will be a year since the oil was first put in during the build. In any case, when I changed it at 3000, I didn't look for anything in the filter. I don't think modern metalurgy is the same as was back in the old days. I wouln't expect to see metal shavings. But I still feel better about getting it changed shortly after break-in was done. Even if I had know the first change would have been called for at 8500, I still would have done the post break-in change. I plan on continuing to do my own change approximately half way in between BMW's changes.

I did my first oil change at 8k, I was actually gonna do it at 10k but when I went to the dealer for a check engine light, they just changed the oil. I always thought doing early first oil change was a myth but hey, whatever makes you comfortable.

It is old tradition that apparently people still follow from the 80's and 90's.
Our engine and oil technology has advanced so far ahead since then that I don't feel like it is necessary to do this in order to "protect" our engine components.. Additionally, I don't plan on keeping my BMW past the warranty expiration so it wouldn't benefit me in anyway to throw couple of hundred dollars to feel better... This is just my opinion of course |

Blackhawks If you think about it.. the car you just traded in (Acura) is what 2 or 3 years old? I'm sure you intentions were to keep it for a while.. but average people these days don't keep their car long after the warranty has expired.. usually they get bored and trade the car in for an updated version or something different...

Regardless, its still not a bad idea to change your oil early the first time. I did it at 3500 miles because I was on a long road trip and unable to do it earlier. Ask them to not reset the computer. My first "scheduled" oil change still shows as around 8k miles on the computer.
Its $100 at my dealer and can't do anything but help.

I just got the email from BMW teleservice that it's time. Only 6150 miles, but I think it had more to do with time rather than miles. It's been a year since it was built.

Oil
Asked for, and did an oil/filter change at BMW on our X5 a little over a Month ago, long before the 1st service time.
A little funny actually, because they really wondered why I wanted to do that before the scheduled service (here 30.000km). A very quick job for them, but when I came back to pick the car - and when they sorted out their orders to find my bill - I actually heard "Ah, its that guy that only wanted the oil changed". Like I was some kind of a special customer...only oil, wow Anyway, deal done, no worries. Best Bent |
