Depends where you live. Here in my city I've seen less than 10 real M cars, most of which are M2s and M4s. The M-Sport packages don't seem to be overly abundant either.

I'm not thrilled about BMW plastering the M logo on non-M cars, but side-by-side you can tell the difference based on styling aggressiveness alone.

Back in the days M cars were only available with manual transmissions, and now they are available with DSG and even normal automatics (that annoyingly try to simulate DSG behavior). Very smart move for BMW and thats what made M cars a lot more popular.

Anybody who buys a BMW F8X to run with the new high-horsepower, tuned-for-the-track Mustangs and Camaros is going to be in for a big surprise.

That's not even anything that new.

The title of this thread is silly. And to post it on an enthusiast forum feels even more silly.

I drive an m240i and i wish it was called the 240is. However, I do understand that some of the performance features were designed by the M team and just using the 'is' badge doesn't make this known.
Most people can't tell any cars apart these days. Us enthusiasts are the minority.

Also, no one is impressed by a BMW anymore. Maybe kids.

The situation really isn’t much different than it was all the way back to the ‘50s and ‘60s, when people spent their hard-earned cash on chrome accessories instead of performance parts. Did you ever hear the phrase, “If it don’t go, chrome it”? It’s the same today, whether it’s an M, AMG, SS, ST or R (although a red R on the back of a Honda Civic is worth 5 horsepower).
Chrome don't get ya home!

The M3/4 are actually priced competitively in its segment. I'm currently looking for a replacement and I can't say that it's been easy. If you can't afford it, I can see how someone might think it's overpriced.

I think a lot depends on where you're located. Affluent areas will obviously see more than their fair share of ///M cars (and far more expensive cars as well!).

Here in St. Louis, I've still only see one M2, and a handful of M3,4,5,6. For every ///M I see, I probably see well over 1k+ regular BMWs. My YMB M4 is the only one I've ever seen in the area, I hadn't even seen the color in person until I picked my car up.

I was also in the camp of folks thinking the M4 was horribly overpriced until I actually spent some time in the car, I now think it's priced competitively with similar cars from other brands. It's an incredible machine, and for the first time in my history of car ownership I have absolutely no desire to mod the stock power levels. The power it puts out now is more than I'll ever need for the street, and I absolutely LOVE the car. It took me awhile to get over missing my Z4M, but now I think it was the smart thing to move on.

I'm just praying that the ///M folks continue to offer their vehicles in a 6 speed. If the next M3/M4 or Z4M (fingers crossed on that one!!) only come with paddles, forget about it.

Who cares? If everyone drove a 1M, would it make it less enjoyable?

You want "exclusivity" in an M car,....just get yourself,...Wait! Strike that,...make that, you'll have to find yourself an E28 M5,...or E30 M3. Trust me,...you will be in an exclusive club for sure!

That said, I'm in Northern VA,...and I'm sure there are a good number of M vehicles in this area,...however, I hardly ever see another M vehicle in this area and when I do, it's mainly the F8X M3. I will say that I live in a neighborhood that has an E39 M5 owner.

Case in point,...since buying my first BMW 320i,....around 1984,....I've only seen 2,..make that two E28 M5s in the metal!,...and both times have been more that 10 years a part!

That's what i thought too but I've noticed a lot of people hating on people that drive bmws or mercs and i can only assume that their jealousy has made them more sensitive.

Why is everyone so caught up in impressing others?

Would you recommend it as a DD? How does it perform in the snow? I’m debating between the M2 or M240xi for my next car, so far learning towards the M240xi as in my line of work there is no such thing as a snow day.

I had an M235i before this. The M2 would be fine in the snow if you had dedicated snow tires. With stock tires, I wouldn’t even try.

I put Michelin A/S 3+ on my M235i and it did fine in the few inches of snow we get here. The PSSs that came on it were terrible in the snow.
