Tick when turning the wheel?

My X6M has developed a ticking sound when I turn the wheel all the way to the right. I noticed it when doing a u-turn today. It only happens when the wheel is turned all the way to the right. Less than full turn, or turning left doesn't make the sound. It sounds like a metal tick, and a slight rattly tamborine kind of sound...

Does anyone have any idea what that might be, and could possibly point me in the right direction on how to figure it out. What to look for... etc..

This is going to have to be a DIY repair.

I have the same sound, but don't know what it is. Car has never seen bad weather, don't think that matters though with this sound.

This is a known issue, wheel bearing or something, if you look it up you'll find it.

Mine just started yesterday, or at least that's when I noticed it. My warranty expires Wednesday. Let's see if I can squeeze this in!

well hell. this seems super simple. thanks for the info/links!

so this is resolved by putting a washer in between the hub and the rotor? that seems too good to be true. hehe

is there any way to tell if this is the problem before I go buying parts?

I had the fix last year and it still seems sporadic. Hub is fine with no play. Only comes out under lateral load. It seems to goes away when I put winter wheels on. It really sounds out at autocross events. Only LF clicks.

nishfish87 What did they do for you? As per the TSB did they just add the lube or did they do the washer thing on the bearing?

FWIW, my dealer ended up replacing both of my front axles. Resolved my ticking noise and got it in under my soon expiring warranty.

Going through my service records mine had this same issue described by the prior owner. Dealer replaced both front axle shafts and front struts.

Front axles?? This is the first account that I've read of that repair for the ticking noise. Do you mind posting your repair order? I'd be curious to see if there's new info/TSB for this issue.

Do people with spacers exhibit the same issues?

This was the TSB i was talking about the lube, https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/20...48221-9999.pdf

Is there a way to see the precedence of TSBs for BMW?

Sure. I don't see any TSB info on it. Also forgot they used remanufactured shafts. That seems weird, but it was covered under warranty, so I'll take it.

Thanks! Did they already perform the TSB on yours? If not, it's surprising they didn't attempt that first.. unless they diagnosed this to be an entirely different issue altogether.

The spacer TSB was never mentioned. Not sure if it was done prior to my ownership. I just described my issue and this was their fix. Will be interesting to see if the clicking comes back if the spacer is the true fix.

So Just looking at this TSB (https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/20...48221-9999.pdf) and lubing up the drive flange.

just going through the instructions for this, and am wondering if I am reading this correctly.

The TSB says follow instruction set
  1. 31 51 010(Replacing radial shaft seal for input flange of front axle differential) for the lube portion of the input flag. Now this guide says to do 26 20 000, prior to commencing it.
  2. 26 20 000(Removing and installing front propeller shaft), based on the photos. This is the drive shaft between the Transfer Case the the front diff.
Is this correct, is that the shaft we remove and flange we lube up? The one that runs between the TC and the front Diff.

Also the TSB says to use this grease (83 23 0 417 754 - Castrol Optitemp HAT LF1). Has anyone been able to find it, outside of BMW?

Looks like the URL is cut off, can you post again? I’m having another issue that occurred after my transfer case was replaced under warranty. It sounds like a binding noise when moving at slow speeds, almost full lock, forward or reverse.
