Cold / freezing weather precaution
Guys,
Would like your take on precautions when having to start your car in a freezing whether like it was today in NYC, almost 0F. Had the case once when I was living in Paris. Had a 318 TDS and tried to open the window during winter. Glass did not break but something happened inside the door where it will go up outside the frame on a corner. Later I learnt that you should never open the window during winter as it can cause to break it. Thank you !! |

Give ample time for fluids to warm up before driving, be aware your door is probably frozen shut, so don't rip the door handle off trying to get in.
Don't even try to open the windows, you're likely to break a window regulator.

Probably right. Back then it was my college car. I had limited mean to maintain the car. Though it still looks great it needs some TLC now.
Almost 20 years old with 80k miles only. Great times !! |

Doors were hard to open. Had to pull a bit. My left over bottle of water was ice lol Noticed the breaks were whistling. After a mile or two it was over. Maybe some ice there. That's when I believe in covers parkings That being said, I don't read much of precaution beside: 1. Not pulling car doors too sudden 2. Not using windows: though I opened a bit mine and was fine. Won't do it again. 3. Probably a good idea to not open moon roof as well. |

My standard practice when it is cold out (actually, regardless of the season), is to generally take it slow until all fluids warm up. I’m probably more mindful of this when it is exceptionally cold out like the past couple of days.

Window regulators on certain or maybe most older 3- series, have a way of breaking, and it's never at a good time, unless you are home in your garage, or close by.
These days, I avoid opening door windows unless the vehicle is warmed up. With my 330, driving half hr to get home, with window down in 20ºF weather, and then despite heater in the garage, freezing my fingers off, while making an emergency repair, is enough motivation to now try to avoid that happening again. Hopefully the X5 has way better window regulators, and this will never be an issue though. |

Some tips:
Coat your rotors in oil so they don’t freeze. Swap out coolant and use water. Coolant keeps things too cool. Use some oil in your washer fluid to help limit freezing. Pour hot water over your windshield To help with ice removal. |

I usually bang my doors a couple times (best if you give it a good dent) the vibrations will loosen the rubber seals
