CarPlay on 2017's

I need another Suv in the house (we have a 2019 40i) and I’ve been considering previous gen x5. I loved the 17 I traded for the 19. Curious if 30,000 is the sweet spot on one now? Maybe 30k miles, nicely equipped?

Is 2017 the first year of CarPlay? It’s a must have an remember id6 had it. Is that always an option? I remember ordering it from the factory but also reading back in the day it could be added later for 300.00

Is that still the case?

I believe there was a cutoff in 2016 (I want to say post-April builds - I’m sure someone else can confirm) that had id6 and CarPlay as an option. I know my 2016 does not have the option from the factory (I went with an MMI CarPlay box add on). All 2017 and later either had the option installed, or it can be hacked on.

30K miles is really low mileage for a 2017, I doubt you'd find one for $30,000, at least not a well equipped one, maybe a sDrive with few options?

Just checked Autotrader, there's 863 2017/2018 F15's, only 33 of those have 30K miles or less. Most are priced $35,000 to $45,000 regardless of model and configuration. You can definitely find a 2017 for $30,000 or less though.

Correct, CarPlay was a $300 factory option (not standard on any model, even the X5M) for 2017 and 2018 model years only. If you find one you like that doesn't have it, there's lots of aftermarket options out there to add CarPlay on any year F15.

I have a 2017 and the $300 CarPlay was NOT an option on the window sticker. I am the second owner of my X5 and CarPlay was a must have. For some reason, my car has it. I seem to remember seeing something about a 20 year "subscription" that could be added after the fact as long as the car has the correct iDrive version. I assume the first owner did that (or something).

Point being, if you're looking at a 2017, and CarPlay isn't on the build sheet, double check whether the car has it or not. Good luck with your search.

2017/2018s had CarPlay as an option, if the one you find does not have it, you can unlock it to enable it.

That’s good to know! Owning a 2019- I still think the better looking and driving x5 is the F series.

Current gen is less ultimate driving and more luxury driving.

I will- I think it needed a special apps option.

Did yours update to the newer look too? CarPlay is great as it continues to update on old cars.

I have a 997 gen 1 Porsche 911- Porsche classic just released a new headunit with CarPlay. Essentially for 1500 you get a plug and play intergrated update created by Porsche.

BMW should be doing this for their cars too.

Agreed, though that can be said about all newer BMWs, every one of them including the ///M cars are getting less engaging/less fun to drive.

You can do this as well with the F15s, not sold via BMW but you can buy the ID6 headunit from a newer model year, and swap it into an older model year, and then have all the OEM functionality of the newer ones (including CarPlay). Runs ~1500 or so on ebay

I just installed the Andream MMI carplay unit on my 2015 35i and while it was kind of a PITA when it comes to installaion, for $275, it's worth it IMO. Works pretty well and feels OEM.

Swapping in the newer head unit seems like a lot of money and you have to deal with coding and may be a little weird if you ever need to have issues fixed by the dealer (from what I understand).

Tell me about it. I had an f30 335 and jumped into the g20. Amazed at the 382hp. Fast. Much less engaging and almost boring compared to my old 3.

I wanted to love and order it- it something was missing. And it wasn’t power.

So cool! But bmw should shoot this..
Id6 and id7 were so good. These 8, 8.5 and 9 are overkill. I get that things have to evolve- maybe I’m just not ready…

All the sellers ive looked into, pre-code for you so you dont have to worry about that at all. Cant speak to the service part but, ive never heard of any issues from it.
