BIMMERPOST NEWS X5 and X6 to get standard PDC and rear view camera BMW has announced Spring 2016 changes for the X5 and X6. This is a global press release. BMW X5 and BMW X6: keep an eye on everything with the standard rear view camera and Park Distance Control. The comfort and everyday functionality of the BMW X5 and BMW X6 are further enhanced by additions to the standard specification of both models. From April 2016 standard equipment for both the BMW X5 Sports Activity Vehicle and the BMW X6 Sports Activity Coupe will include Park Distance Control (PDC) with sensors in the front and rear apron. The rear view camera that will likewise be fitted as standard on the BMW X6. BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M provides even greater assistance for the driver when manoeuvring and parking. The image it generates is sent to the iDrive operating system’s Control Display, and interactive guide lines and colour-coded surfaces integrated into the image improve orientation when reversing. For cars also fitted with an optional trailer coupling, the rear view camera has a zoom function that makes it easier to back up accurately when hitching up a trailer. |

I get it, and I dont mind to much being nickle and dimmed for everything, but a rear camera on an SUV is basically standard just about everywhere these days.
Its a bit crazy that it took this long.

Yep.. BMW has been doing this forever.... For example: Navigation was optional for a very long time until recently became standard. All other car makes had Nav standard WAY before BMW decided to.

Actually i think all manufacturers are legally required to include back up cameras as of 2016. BMW adjusted the price of the car up to cover their cost so they didn't give us anything really lol.

One thing BMW does seem to be on the forefront of is lighting technology. Not whining about how long it'll take for some of the tech to reach all models within the brand, but I was watching an episode of Motorweek this past weekend and they did a piece on lighting. They specifically mentioned legislation was forthcoming to assign std levels/nomenclature to headlights. They also talked about adaptive headlights (old news), High Beam Assist, and most importantly: "There will be changes to finally remove antiquated laws preventing superior lighting technology from making onto our shores." For years we've all known that ECE lighting stds were superior, but DOT regulations made it technically illegal to run with euro headlights. Hopefully this gets changed soon.

I mean you can still get a 3 series with Halogen lights, that has nothing to do with US DOT. Granted the LED option is pretty cheap but you could make HID at least standard.

^^^ Agree. HID should definitely be standard, with LED being the option. My gf's old 2004 Acura TL had HID headlamps.

Whether a feature comes standard or not isn't the point. That's a pure bean-counter play. The point of the segment was that lighting standards in the US will be changing for the better soon. Halogens may be "outlawed" sooner rather than later both due to increased visibility as well as energy savings (LEDs). Honda/Acura has always led the way here, but BMW is certainly on the forefront now as well.
ps you think BMW is bad... Benz went wayyyy backward, taking away projector halogens and going back to reflector bowls!!

A rear view camera should be standard on a SUV. It's a matter of safety. It's going to be a legal requirement soon for all cars.
In terms of LED lights, I suspect it will also be standard on a X5 just as it is on the LCI 340i. Regular LEDs are standard and adaptive LEDs cost $900 |

Any link to the official release, just ordered a new X5 a few days ago, would like to get in on the free camera instead of paying $500 for it!

Still can't find any info on this, BMW support knows nothing (like normal), dealer hasn't heard of it, BMW press release site has not info and even bimmerpost news doesn't seem to have the actual article shared that I can find - not sure this is really happening!
NHTSA doesn't require a backup camera until May of 2018, so thinking BMW will keep taking our $400 until at least then!

The PDC is so worth it.... It makes maneuvering the vehicle into tight spaces super easy especially when parking is at a premium here in LA - and its automatic so no pushing buttons to activate -

Reading it again it does seem to say that, but according to the website PDC front and rear is standard and has been for some time, only option was the camera, so the whole thing is confusing!
