Auto Stop/Start

Can any current X5 owners confirm if this "feature" can be turned off... ideally permanently?
I seem to recall the car resorts to the "last know state" for it but just double checking in case I need to request my dealer code it before handover.
Thanks

Mine keeps doing it (EURO spec 30d), hate that feature, i know it is good for the environment, but i do not think it is doing any favors for the engine as well as electronic components in the car (in long term).

I know one way is to drive in sport mode (sport mode has to be configured to engine setup sport, suspension only in sport will still activate start stop), but i do not want to drive to work in sport mode, comfort is better for city driving.

Other solution i though of is to remember to shut it off when starting the car.

Permanently off? I asked dealer to do so on F25, I think he said cannot do that. In the end I chose last user profile. Gives more flexibility. 1st program change free, next one was $250. I heard Europe charges. For F15, the car comes as last user profile.

Owners manual warns of premature parts wear. Despite a heavy duty starter.

I'd seriously want to hear the rationale behind putting start-stop system into cars with 350+ BHP.

I believe it's mandatory or soon going to be mandatory in the EU.

And after two years with a car that has this feature, I can tell you: You get used to it. It takes time though.

Keep in mind, too, that there are more than a dozen reasons why your car may choose not to stop the engine. It doesn't turn off all the time.

Sure, you can get used to pretty much anything, but why oh why? Then again, the moment I saw Lambo (LP 700-4 to be precise) get a start/stop + cylinder deactivation my inner petrol head cried. Got to be happy we live here and now and can still enjoy those Vxx live sounds around... in X dozen years all our kids are going to hear is the stupid nothing from Teslas or an "engine via speakers" at best.

Armen383 no hard feelings, but you are classic example of people who are afraid of new tech in their cars

Garage List
2017 BMW M3 ZCP  [0.00]
The whole Auto Start/Stop is designed to bump the testing MPG numbers. Personally, if you have to use the Auto stop/start to save gas then maybe the specific BMW is not for you.

I have it on my M3 and I have used it before and usually it is when I am going to a drive through and I know it will be a few min of just sitting and waiting. I bumped it on one time when driving around town on a nice sunny day. Had the windows down and pulled up to a stop light, the car shut off. What really sucked my son distracted me and the light changed, i was a bit late reacting and hit the gas to take off, there was a hesitation, the car started up and tore off. Looked like a frickin fool.

To the point of when the Auto Stop/Start actually engages when it is active. There are so many factors that most of the time it does not even work on the M3. (Too hot(car and outside temp), too cold(car and outside temp, cannot just turn it on at a stand still(need to be going 10mph for it to engage) battery charge, ect. Maybe it is different on the latest version of the stop/start but on my 2011 it is worthless.

It can be coded off. Dealers typically won't do it but if you find a forum member near you with coding tools they can likely turn it off.

Some interesting information here guys, thanks. I will be addressing it firstly with my dealer and then see what his response is.
I've been in cars recently, one that comes to mind is a friends 2013 Merc, and there is almost a sudden sense of embarrassment that comes over him when the engine cuts out at a traffic light - it looks like he's staled his car! He still hasn't got used to it and hates it!
I'm keen to avoid this experience. I certainly don't believe you should be forced into this way of driving (even if you are technically stopped)

I have a new X5, and there is a button that you can turn it off. Also, on the new models (like mine), it remembers the last state you had it in. In other words, I turned it off this winter, and have not worried about it since.

I have pressed the small button next to Start button. It's never restored for me.

This.
Yup- I keep mine off. It's never been turned back on (in 3000 miles). Only depressing the permanent AS toggle on (next to the starter button) or putting the X5 in Eco Pro mode would turn It back on.

My experience is the same. In fact, even switching back out of Eco Pro, the AS Kill switches off, and does not re-engage when returning to Comfort. Fine for me once I understood it was happening.

In real life do Auto stop/start really gives you improved gas mileage? I have never driven one with this feature. Waiting for my new X5 to see what's irs all about.

Maybe if you spend extended time sitting still in traffic. But an idling car does not consume much gas for stop-light type periods. Further, the case has been repeatedly made that all the start/stopping likely takes a toll on mechanical parts like the starter. And the oil pump isn't operating when the engine isn't turning so the oil is draining to the sump. No thanks.

I think it's more about emissions. MPG is more for marketing… Supposedly there is a tipping point, amount of time spent idling, where there is a mpg benefit.

as some already said it auto start stop is meant for city driving so there you will see 15% improvement if you use it compared to not using it
