What oil for Diesel?

Hi,

Other than the dealership oil, what oil is best for the X5 diesel? I ordered Mobil 1 ESP because I saw someone mention it on here, but the Mobil 1 website says that have no oil that works for the X5d so that left me confused. Castrol says their Edge C3 is good to use.

Can I use the Mobil 1 ESP or go with the Castrol?

Thank you!

As long it meet BMW LL-04 (5w-30) or LL-12fe (0w-30).

I personally use Mobil 1 ESP 5w-30 it’s very robust and heavy for 5w-30 oil.

On another note However there is a new Mobil esp 0w-40 oil that was introduced for the now corvette that has BMW LL-04 rating that seems to be a very good all season weight oil, but it’s very difficult to find in US at the moment.

The BMW oil is basically rebranded [Shell] Pennzoil Platinum Euro L 5W30 which currently sells for $6.50/Qt plus tax on Amazon, right now there is a $2/Qt rebate, so only $4.50/Qt pretty solid price. (BTW it's cheaper to buy them per bottle than per case, go figure)

That said I get a case from the dealer for the BMW 5W40 (I have the gas motor), $90 for 12 L, pretty good price since my fill is 9.5 Qt equaling 9 L. No half bottles after an oil change. Only $5 more than Amazon regularly priced, not too bad, dealership parts sees me regularly for items, they are happy, I get good prices on stuff, I'm happy.

That said I avoid the Mercedes parts department. $90 for wipers vs $25 for the same Bosch part?

Funny thing, the Mobil 1 website used to have ESP 5w30 as for bmw diesel. Now, I don’t see it as listed for bmw anymore. Also, our 14 x5d started life using bmws 5w30 oil. In the last 2 or 3 years, bmw switched to 0w30. I wonder if mobil 1 esp lost the ll04 rating because of the weight. Even still, I use the esp 5w30 for my x5d as it is a low saps oil. I sent in an oil sample to blackstone, so I’ll post it up when it arrives

Mobil may have changed the additive package that doesn't meet the LL-04 requirement

Wow 2 month ago I checked ll04 was there both 0w-30 and 0w-40and now it’s gone, looks like they’re strictly with shell.

Update:

Did a little research apparently you can use Mobil 1 but it must say on the bottle Mobil 1 formula ESP 5w-30 (been phased out) if it just says Mobil 1 ESP 5w30 (new version) then it’s not USABLE. Differents is the Sulfated ash was increased from 0.6 to 0.8 (higher is not good for emission systems) and it’s marginally thinner.

I used Mobil 1 in all my gas engines until it was revealed that to conform to WALMARTS pricing needs MOBIL 1 was reformulated, several years back. The product no longer met minimum standards for my needs. LIQUI MOLY is the replacement.
For my 35d the additional oil change regimen I have followed currently uses LIQUI MOLY or ROTELLA at 7k change intervals. Subsequent lab analysis bears out both as being well suited to my needs. Both have LL04 specification.
I encourage you to drill down through the posts about this elsewhere on this forum. This is a popular topic.

For the diesel, I know the recommended oil is Castrol Professional SLX 5W30.

Just get the Pennzoil which is basically same as BMW stuff.

It seems all the Mobil 1 stuff lost BMW approval. I used to used Mobil 1 0W40 on all my cars. Not anymore.

In both my X5s I just use the dealer oil as after CCA disc its about same price as the 2 mentioned alternatives.

That’s very interesting to know. I’ll check and see which one I used, but I am sure that it said it’s fine for DPFs in modern diesels. I assumed Mobil 1 wasn’t recommended because of the weight change I’m still going to use it as long as it’s safe for a dpf.
Edited. I checked the bottles and it’s the ll04 formula that I used

I've been using Pennzoil Platinum Euro L 5W-30 which is LL-04 approved for my diesels for 3 years now. At $23 per 5qt jug at walmart (cheaper when you do the rebates) it's a no brainer. I couldn't find a better and more readily available oil than this.

Mobil is not a "true" synthetic. Have to go to Redline, Amsoil, Motul, and the like for group IV or better, true synthetics (I’ve always used Motul and they have a bmw rated version for diesels).

I have been using Shell Rotella diesel specific 5w-40 in my E70 the last few changes with good results. I also recommend everyone change their diesel oil frequently due to the amount of soot these systems collect. Keeping clean oil in there will help the motor run cleaner over the long haul.

For price conscious folks I suggest using fcp euro and their lifetime guarantee. With a bit of effort it will only cost you the price of return shipping.

Haha. I had to laugh when I read this. What are “your” needs?? How are they different than ours? The Mobil 1 being sold in Walmart at $27, or so, per 5qt jug is the EXACT SAME jug being sold at Pep Boys for $41 (I was at a Pep boys Sunday and noticed the EP 5w30 at $41). Sales at Walmart make profit because of volume. I use that stuff in my FJ Cruiser.

Please tell us how Mobil 1 doesn’t meet your needs

All you have to do is read the labels.

Mobil 1 is a different product now compared to just a few years ago.
For you commuters M1 is probably just fine. I find that towing my toys through all sorts of weather extremes up and down the west coast requires a better product. Pull a sample of your oil and let me know what Blackstone, or whoever you choose, says about your choice. I’ll still be enjoying my F15 long after you turn your lease back in.

Oil's are more formulated based on regional needs, here in the US our fuels have higher sulfur contents or for diesel lower cetane and higher impurities to compensate we have a lot of additives and detergents to counter them, an example BMW gas powered (N4x and N5x) engines in europe uses LL-04 spec oil vs LL-01 in the US.

However I can see you point for Mobil 1 developing/consolidating oils for the mass consumers (ie Mobil 1 Annual Protection Oil for Supermarket) however Mobil 1 ESP a speciality oil and is unlikely Mobil 1 will reformulate those oils for sake of keeping on supermarket shelves only reason Mobil 1 got drop is because of Shell recently won suppliers for BMW oils and mobil 1 just reformulated their ESP oil, it be a few years before BMW starts approving other oils brands.

I don’t lease cars, I buy them to keep for long term. If you noticed my sig, my 95 M3 is approaching 24 years old. And yes, I’ve put mobil 1 in it since ‘97 The ‘11 M3 is takes castrol because mobil doesn’t make a compatible oil

Good report. I’m using a 7k interval as opposed to your higher interval. I’m keeping mine for the long haul, so far with no problems.
