Not sure what the tax rate in other states or possible wait that some may not want to endure, but taking MN for example, I'd rather pay 6.5% and get a brand new car than the one with 8k miles on it.

I understand, but buying from someone and not a dealer you don't pay sales tax. You just have to pay property tax when you register the car. Many Disable Veterans like my self in the great state of Texas don't pay property tax. So good luck on your new purchase, and maybe someone here may want to save a little. Thanks for your comment.

Dinan, I am in Seoul, Korea as well. I think you will be happy with it here. Let me know if you need any info for Seoul. BTW, I am in Yongsan with the Army.

Is there a BMW dealership in Seoul? I heard my warranty will only be 2 years in Korea? Also, heard traffic is crazy like 2 hours to drive 30 miles during rush hour? Is this true?

take the KTX/ ITX/ subway. you really don't need a car.
Hyundai cars in Korea look a lot different and the Genesis is pretty luxury over there so that might suffice. X5M is overkill but if you're ballin, just take it haha

The taxes vary by state. There are some exemptions regardless of state depending on qualification the majority of the population wouldn't qualify for. In Texas, you do pay sales tax on private party sales. It's collected at the county tax office when new owner registers. New owner pays SPV from private party to private party.
It's hard to compete against the new car prices right now. 4,000 in cash incentives on top of pretty decent discounts. Also add in the Zero cost maintenance does not pass through to the new owner the new car is typically a better value. If you're relocating for work I'm surprised your employer would not cover the loss. |

I just left Korea last December. There are quite a few BMW dealerships and service centers in Seoul. You will not have a warranty on your X5M in Korea. Prior to PCSing there in 2012, I purchased a brand new '13 E70 and took it over there. When I went to get my first oil and brake fluid change it cost over $400 USD. I asked about my maintenance package/warranty and they said that's a contract by BMW USA. Their explanation was BMW dealerships in Korea operated as independent importers/dealers and offer their own warranties on vehicles sold; nothing set by BMW Korea. Traffic does get crazy. Avoid driving during Korean holidays. Most folks live in the surround areas around post. Plenty of decent housing in the area. One time it took me 45 mins to drive 5 mins.

I hope you make a sale. It may be diffucult because most people don't have that tax benefit you have. If you can swing it, take it with you to Seoul. Factor in the loss from the sale of the X5M with the money you'd put into another car, maybe the difference isn't as horrible.

Kolon and Handok Motors are the two BMW importers in Korea. There is a service center 5 min from Yongsan's PX gate that can do oil changes etc. I drive 100km each day between Yongsan and where I work - it's all about what time you leave (I drive early or very late) and then can really push it. I go 100+ kmp on the Donbu expressway and 88 Olympic Expressway, slowing down for speed cameras (Waze helps). Also, there is the Howon 100, with people going 120kmp+.
One thing about Seoul - your X5M won't stand out too much. There's already one F15 X5M on Yongsan, plus Seoul has a shit ton of Porsches, Maseratis, Bentleys, etc. You'll fit right in! Looking at picking up an already in-port US spec BMW X5 from BMW Military Sales in the next few days. |

Dinan-M, sorry for the late reply. YES, there is a BMW dealership in Seoul but two year warranty as you stated is the time limit. An YES traffic can be crazy with 25 million people living in the city....well you can guess the rest. However, I drive my X5 omw to the golf course every weekend and it is a nice drive. No other places to open up your cal unless you take the freeway to go to other cities like Busan, Daegu, etc.
