Hi folks

It's only done 40K miles approximately and it's developed a hollow knocking noise like a tired london black cab (hallmark noise) audible at idle. Any ideas what's causing this?

What is it that you hear wrong? Sounds like a happy diesel to me.

It's difficult to hear but it's the lower frequency hollow noise characteristic of a knackered London cab. I'll try to take a better recording.

Sounds good to me as well, no metal knocking that I can discern

Yeah that is not right. I have a 40d and mine certainly doesn’t sound like that.

Sounds normal diesel x5, my x5 35d gets a little noisier when engine is cold and/or the ambient temp is low it has that throaty idle and pronounced injector knock/tick, once warmed up it fine.
