x5 35i M sport drivetrain/brake malfunction

The Mrs went on a 400 km business trip and was 300 kms into it on her way back. She stopped for fuel (shell v-power) after fueling she started the x5 and got the drive train malfunction error. Then got brake malfunction pull over put in Park and call BMW assist.

400 kms on the vehicle, she actually got rid of her 335i M sport because she could not drive the thing with out the error which of course never showed up in the system when it was taken in.

I fought long and hard for the 50i, arguing that when we got the n55 it would be riddled with drivetrain malfunctions the same as her 335 was but at 15k more it's hard to justify. I told the SA and sales manager my worries to which they assured me that it would have no issues. I then said "if the x5 came in with drivetrain malfunction I want an upgrade to the 50i no charge"

Are there any other x5 n55 issues out there right now?

Do I have any right to hold them to the 50i, what are my options here.

I got the Drivetrain Malfunction error last week after the car was parked outside at -2F for the entire day. Drove fine until got home. Called the dealer and was told it could be a sensor malfunction because of the weather. Left the car in the garage overnight and after that no more errors or any issues.

No...and you aren't aware of the problems with the V8s??? Be careful what you wish for.

Sorry to read about now your F15's problem. I can't believe how many problems there have been with this gerneration thus far....ridiculous. I "think" I really want one, but nervous about placing an order.

I never had the issue with my f10 m5, but haven't heard a lot about the 50i issues.

What does a guy do? Give it back and get a cayenne?

Sales manager just called and said something about a PDM module and how it loses connection when it gets too hot. Said this has happened to a few people here's to hoping that fixes it.

At least it wasn't the typical driver profile but I have my doubts.

I was test driving a '13 550i about 6 months ago and it got the drivetrain malfunction during the test drive! Lost most of the power and wouldn't come out of first gear. Said return to service centre or something like that.

N55 is by far the most ubiquitous engine in the lineup. They'll sort it out.

These errors should automatically be in the log, no need to have them appear right at the moment you're at the dealership. On the bimmerfest F15 forum there are several posters with this same error.

So dealership has 3 of these right now. The head mechanic is now the lead for bmw NA for this issue. The PDM sensor is messing up due to placement and moisture. They did have to replicate the error and did so by taking the PDM sensor out and placing it in their freezer.

They had to show the relay was messing up and not letting the current through. Bmw North America and BMW AG are apparently meeting to discuss a solution. Sounds like they are going to extend the wiring so the PDM is not isolated from the engine bay and can stay warm from the engine.

Hopefully this works.

Will keep everyone updated.

The issue is that 99.9% of these malfunctions are non engine related.

I just joined this thread on this error. Started my vehicle with just under 400 km. It gave me the error Drivetrain Malfunction. Restarted twice and now it says :All Systems Ok". What is this? Definitely taking it to the dealer but it is so strange.

The PDM sensor, had to be moved. The drain for the snow where the wipers were dripped right on the PDM so they moved it and we haven't had any more issues. Just over 2000kms now

Thanks, Drew. I'll be sure to mention this to the service center.

Hi Drew, I am checking on this with the service center and we can't seem to find a PDM sensor. Do you mean the VDM (Vertical Dynamics Management) sensor?

They told me PDM, is under the hood passenger side under all the plastic. Pretty sure it's under the intake for the heater

Jesus, so many years passed and I got this twice today on my 2016 X5 with the 25d engine. No extreme temperatures, no extreme speeds, just regular driving. Fixed by restaring vehicle...this time.

Vacation about to start and I fear Im gonna have this issue. Seriously, I've been a driver for 10 years and poor for most of them. I've been driving old Fords, Hyundais, Kias and whatever and pretty much never had any issue. Now with this car, in 6 months since new I had it in for

2 windshield repairs, breaks immidiately
1 fog light repair. Dealer say they self-destruct
Runflat tires losing their balance on and off

And now I'll have to deal with this too. I'm so Close to going back to Korean cars.
