well couldn't stop myself getting VIN, BMW archive states production date 28 January - is that build start or finish?, how long do they take to build?
Dealer hoping for week 11 or sooner. Now will be checking shipping line website ad infinitum. Order date 17 December |

Smart move x5x2 - I think it's great how you can see the detail.
It's build finish date. The reason I say this is that my car shows being built on 24th. I spoke to my dealer on the 22nd who said it was in the paint shop. I'm with you too checking the shipping website. Though I'm a little confused as to whether I need full VIN (nothing shows) or VIN minus last 3 digits (where it shows). |

It looks like our cars are being build at the same time which means we should see them the same week. What's your take based on a Feb 6th build as to when the car will hit the dealers?

Time difference between target build week and owner's website
Can anyone comment on the delay between when you were told your car would be built and when it moved from box 1 to box 2 on the owner's website. My car has a production # and my dealer told me it would be built in first week in February. When should I expect to see a change recorded on the owner's tracking location on the bmw website?

The website build tracking is notoriously slow. Call (800) 831-1117 and track with your vin or order number. If it gives the same response as the website talk to a live person. My 35d went into production today and both the website and automated response have not been updated. Mine is slated to be finished on the 8th (this is week 6 btw).

X5 xDrive50i ordered
Big thanks to everybody on this blog who helped me navigate this whole ordering process. I'm replacing my 2011 X5 xDrive50i and wanted to stay with the big V8. I really loved the new MSport package but only liked it with the larger 20" wheels which just don't work for daily driving in Manhattan and the surrounding area, so I settled on the X Line. Here's what's on the way:
14XJ X5 xDrive50i ZXD xLine A90 Dark Graphite Metallic NAMY Mocha Nappa Leather 4CV Fineline Oak Wood 3MC High Gloss Roof Rails ZCW Cold Weather Package ZDB Driver Assistance Plus 5AT ACC Stop n Go ZEC Executive Package ZLP LED Lighting Package ZMD Mocha Interior Design Package 2VM Dynamic Damper Control 453 Front Ventilated seats 4FF Comfort Rear Seats 4NB 4-zone automatic climate control 6UK Night Vision with Pedestrian Detection Ordered December 20th and dealer says I'm scheduled for production Feb 6th. Skipped the B&O since I like the Harmon system in my E70. Skipped 3rd row and rear Entertainment since I don't have kids. Also skipped Dynamic Handling since this won't be going to a track and figured Damper Control would be good enough. Didn't get active parking since I know how to park and skipped concierge since I'd never use it. Didn't get Active Steering since I've never used it and thus thought it was unnecessary. And the Night Vision is just a gimmick that I figured would be "cool" but otherwise just a splurge. Wish I could have the LED lights and Night Vision re-coded for non-US rules but doubt the dealer will do it. Coincidentally I got so excited about all of the new tech on the BMW, I decided to trade my '04 Mercedes SL600 for a '12 BMW 650i convertible in Mojave with Ivory interior and I LOVE it. Don't miss the V12 at all!! Looking forward to even more fun with the F15! |

How long do you guys reckon it'd take before I'm able to take delivery. My dealership tells me about a month after it begins production. I'm in the Seattle area. |

Wrong week
my build will be not this week, but next week, but sounds like it is on track. Any sense of the time from finished build at factory in South Carolina to ready for dealer delivery? Some dealer prep required on mine like installing trailer hitch.

Time between order and build
Mine was ordered week of November 18th and will be built next week. I think this is largely a dealer allocation problem. I think my dealer was only allocated one diesel per month for first couple of months, so I missed the January allocation and got February instead. Some have speculated that overseas customers who pay a substantial premium and buy more diesels get more allocations. This would make sense to me and I don't begrudge BMW for doing this. A month or so either way didn't make that much difference to me, and if the bonus of the delay is that more of the early model year glitches get addressed, so much the better.

11/24: Order placed for December allocation. Targeted completion Feb 7 The anticipation is killing me! I call and check the website every day. The phone still says, "scheduled for production with no confirmed production date," and the website shows that it has entered production. So the website has been more up to date for me. I do talk to a representative when I call and they are sometimes able to get a bit more detail on the schedule than the automated phone response and website. |

Production begins
So, the website just changed my status to "Production Begins" and I spoke to a live person who indicated it is in the body shop. I am guessing that production is about a three or four day process at most, anyone know? I am encouraged that it started a couple of days earlier than I expected, so maybe it will be on a truck heading north early next week.

Michiganian - My 35d took 10 calendar days from entering production to production complete. I concur with others who say the web site is way more accurate than the 800 number, but a live person on the 800 number is best. Even after my vehicle had finished production, the 800 number still said it had not yet started and was waiting for a production slot.
I am doing a PCD and the first available PCD date was 2 weeks after production was complete. Edited to correct "web site" to "800 number". I meant to say that the web site was accurate but the 800 number was not - it now reads correctly. Apologies for any confusion Michiganian. |

Production to completion
Thanks, UsAusi, interesting, in this case the website seemed to match the actual entry into production based on what the live person said. I suppose if there is an issue with a part, or, heaven forbid, an error detected in production that has to be reworked, things could drag out. On the other hand, I assume their production process is designed not to have half finished cars stacking up all over the place, so I am keeping my fingers crossed. I wasn't supposed to start production until next week.

I finally caved and switched dealers to my old dealer back east. Honestly, I should've gone with them all along but since moving to SF from DC I figured it would be best to shop locally.

Just picked up my X5 xLine diesel at the dealership today -- 5 weeks from order date to delivery in Seattle. Will post pics and other thoughts on the driving experience tomorrow. Took it out for some spirited driving in Sport and Sport + modes (it has the dynamic handling package) and it handles at least 2x better than both my e36 M3 and e61 5er. I'm so glad I paid up for that package. Incredible. Steering also felt firm and the non-M sports steering wheel is as good (and thick) as my M-sports steering wheel on my 2010 5er.

Yep the dynamic handling package was well worth it (I don't have a need for 3rd row seats + I didn't get the M-package as it didn't come in the color I wanted of platinum gray). Surround view camera and HUD was also worth the upgrade, as was was the Harmon Kardon upgrade (perfect for Daft Punk + James Blake post-dubstep music).
