Attempted break-in?

So tell me if I'm losing my mind, but I think someone might have tried to break into my car. A neighbor said she saw someone poking around the car one night and I didn't think much of it since everything looked fine and no alarm went off. A few days later I was helping my toddler out of the back and noticed that the door panel looked like it had been pried off and the outer handle had been broken as well. Is this just in my head? How else could this have happened?

From the angle though it doesn't look terribly bad.
When I read the title I thought of an engine break-in.

Damn that doesn't look pleasant. Definitely looks like attempted break-in. You should install cameras in front of the house! Stay safe.

Do you have an alarm system? I can see you have comfort access, but obviously they did not use comfort access for attempting to break in.

My new car soon coming on order with comfort access option, also with factory built in alarm.... They stole navigation unit on my previous F15, looked messy afterwards and made my young son upset and scared...

What else did you think happen with both? They just fell off on their own? Definitely an attempt to break in.

I do have the standard alarm and from what I understand, it arms automatically when it locks. I've never disabled the motion sensor in the cabin either. Not sure how it didn't go off. That's a little disturbing. Glad they couldn't finish the job...

Little question. I assume there is no other damage on the door, right? How did it happen? Apparently door was not opened, so how they pried the inside door panel without opening the door? I mean there are ways to insert something ( inflatable tool for instance) and pry a top part of the door, but pry this part of the door to stick something in the hole to pry door panel would cause big damage to external door panel... Strange. I know, toddlers do have a very strong and curios finger)))

Excellent question, and I'm not entirely sure. There is no visible chip or damage to the paint or rubber door gasket that I can detect, but they did pry off the non-moving portion of the door handle. I wonder if they forced something through that to pop open the door panel inside, who knows. BMW dealership is pretty sure it was a break-in attempt. It's in the shop right now getting fixed...
