Family Hauler?
Hey Gents, I am in the market for a new suv and x5M is top of the list. Wanted to get some opinions. I currently am in a benz gwagon (2013 G550).
I am in market for a new machine that can handle far better than the G, and provide more comforts. Particularly, my question is how does the X5M do as a long distance hauler? I only drive once every two weeks but that drive is 220miles, 85% highway, the rest super windy mountain roads and ultimately, 1% on a dirt hill with extreme grade. I test drove the M and just couldn't uncover how I will enjoy a 4 hour Friday night drive... with Wife and people in back seats. I love the G as it will get me there no matter what, but I hate the G because I sit upright and it tracks all over the highway with its antiquated ball steering. I am also someone who just needs a power house (personal thing, call me shallow). I came form a rover sport and that is my back up option to X5M. So ----- can anyone share some honest feedback on sitting in the seat long term, driving long distances (with traffic from NYC to Vermont), and how passanger comfort might be. Yes I know this is a sports car. But can it people haul in comfort too? |

I did a 900 mile trip right after picking up my x5m and it was very comfy. No complaints from my passenger either. It is a much better choice than the x6m, as the backseat is garbage for anyone near six feet tall...
There seems to be plenty of legroom in the back, and a good amount of storage for luggage. Last edited by tastelid; 11-19-2015 at 08:35 AM.. |

I had many BMWs, from 2012 X5 to 750Li to M3. I put a lot of miles on my cars, I love road trips with my wife and nieces. I usually put a bout 25k miles per year.
When I had the E70 X5, we drove from KC to Houston, TX 3 times per year. It's just comfy. The 750Li was even better, comfortable and quiet, eats up miles without you knowing it. This would be in between the last gen X5 and 7 series comfort level. The F85 X5M, when in efficient mode, is a tame beast. The suspension is soft and the cabin is very quiet. Merino leather in the X5M is so soft, much softer than Nappa leather in my F02 750Li. My X5M is so much roomier and comfortable for road trips compared to my 6 series Gran Coupe, which I have taken the 6 series up to Rockies a few times. If you're looking for power house SUV, tons of power, handles very well, and yet comfy this is it. When in efficient mode, you can't even tell that you're driving the fastest production SUV on the planet.

Thanks guys - it was hard to tell during test drive with the sales dude pressing all kinds of buttons etc. I couldn't tell the difference between anything in a short test drive.

Your driving schedule is similar to mine, except for the 1% steep dirt part. I enjoy every mile of it.
The X5 M has a lots of "character" - quiet and sweet if driven slowly, but very engaging if pushed to its limits - great fun, every time. I start every long trip looking forward to it, even if I'm tired - for me this is a good "acid test" for any car. Children have a good rear entertainment system but it's still not BluRay capable... After some 5000 miles the defect rate on my one is zero, not a single even minor malfunction or emerging blemish - and zero oil consumption. I'm happy I bought the longest (6y) warranty extension, because I will likely keep it for many years. |

My last two cars are 2009 750Li and 2013 750i M-sport, ( and always have large flagship sedans over the last 10 years ), after I get my X6M, while I love the fun driving it, I don't want to take it to long trip since the suspension is quite stiff compare to my 7s. Maybe I'm spoiled.

I cross shopped the range and range sport. the range sport suspension SUCKED. it was like a pickup truck. the regular range was much better, however, for the same price as a stock diesel or six cyl, you can get a loaded X5M? no comparision! got the X5M and so thankful I did. the range is overpriced for what you get.

Thanks for the inputs. Might abuse the G550 this winter and order the M in March so I get it post winter.
I'll be reading the snow tire forums alot in the meantime. Fed going with 20"s and dedicated snow tires for winter. I don't mess around with those VT roads. Figure the x5m m even though I'm reading its stiff, will likely be incredibly comfy coming from the G wagon which is pretty hard truck to drive. |
