It sounds pure mechanical, I don't think there is any coding needs to be done. Will see. I do not expect remedy any time soon for this one.

Just made a maintenance appointment for my 2018 X35d and was notified about the recall but told there are still no parts available.

Is anyone's check engine coming on due to this? Mine is, and goes back and forth (on/off). I bought a code reader that shows EGR errors in the fall.

My 2014 did the on/off CEL. Dealer said it was the EGR and this was before the recall.

Mine is lit up too, at dealer now, and in rental by them until fixed… could be a while. Mine literally calls out the EGR cooler issue.

I just picked up a 2015 X5d from auction. Needed some front end work (plastics & paint) and also an open recall on this issue.. First vehicle with DEF, and I'm going to guess that it should not have a horrid burned smell (my 05 Ford POWERSMOKE does not, but no DEF there)

The potential fire hazard has me rather concerned since this was to be my family daily driver. So, I guess I'll keep my F25 until this one gets the recall dealt with, downside, I'm sitting on a chunk of change I hoped to turn ASAP, but, once the recall is addressed, I'll have a problem free, 110% dealer serviced X5d which is darn near in perfect cosmetic condition, with no other mechanical issues.

Ran it thru the list of checks with my Autel, and aside from a driver restraint error, I've got no other codes, and I think my restraint code gets back to a failed module under the seat. No other codes for airbags, seat belts or the likes come up, and since my memory functions don't work, I'm going to keep my eye out for a used module and hope that addresses my issue.

Anyone run into any FIRE issues if you're continuing to drive your X5, or what a CORRECT exhaust smell should smell like with DEF?

My local dealer didn't have much of opinion on the 'safety' issue if I were to drive it, only commented that no fix is available at the time (parts) - which I guess I expected them not to comment on the safety. so, it sits in the shed next to all my other projects for the moment.

Thanks!

I was looking at a 17-18 35d last year but they pulled literally all of the diesels off the lot due to recalls so I went with the 18 35i instead. No issues but it's unfortunate to hear about these issues coming up. Scary.

I've got a 2018 m50d that doesn't fall into the recall. My EGR has just been confirmed faulty and being replaced by bmw, luckily still under warranty. Just waiting to find out if the cooler is faulty too as had a bout of needing to top the coolant up several times over the last month or so. My dads 2017 740d G11 has also just had EGR and cooler replaced, BMW agreed to cover all the costs as it is out of warranty.

I have a 2014 535d. Original EGR coolant recall inspection was done in 2019 and like all dealers mine does not have the necessary parts to complete the new recall.

I'm now leaking coolant again. Not sure where it's going...

Questions:
Is the vehicle safe to drive until an inspection can be completed?
Any thoughts on where the coolant is going?

Thank you

Well it depends on the leak you have, if its radiator leak its one thing if this is EGR cooler leak it might be potentially dangerous.

When you say coolant is leaking, how are you confirming or tacking the loss? Low coolant warning or visual inspection of the reservoir?

The only visual inspection I'm aware of is the expansion/reservoir tank. I found that the tank's volume can ebb and flow from day to day and is not a constant for measurement unless it is repeated low/empty and requiring a refill/top off to avoid low coolant warnings.

I'd like to understand your method tracking the leak.

I finally got out in my trouble 5 last night to empty my bank account to fill the tank. While my CEL did go on briefly for what I believe was the EGR issue (didn't have my scanner on me) it did go off a few minutes later, so I can hope that my issue is minor thus far. Like everyone else, no word on dealer for parts or timeline. This is getting a little frustrating as I need to have the inspection performed to get the title back to me for insurance, and MORE importantly so I can feel more confident in driving it.

If I remember correctly it was over a year for the remedy to show up during first EGR recall.

Just heard from BMW, my part should be in to the dealer in October. Something and likely will put me without the car for 7+ months

I have 2015 35d w/ 140,000mi, got recall notice for egr cooler - still waiting to hear from local dealer when a remedy is available. Of course, shortly after the recall notice I started getting diesel smell in the cabin and a CEL on dash, was thinking its probably related to the EGR cooler recall, maybe a cracked stainless bellows, but I removed the EGR cooler (mounted front of the engine) to inspect and found no signs of cracks or soot anywhere so I re-installed it. I did find some loose hardware on it, probably from most recent recall, but no signs of exhaust leak.

I went ahead and cleaned carbon from all the plastic intake parts up to engine head and with everything removed down to turbo, I noticed a lot of soot on the back pressure regulator assy that lives next to the exhaust manifold. Closer look I noticed the back pressure valve actuator arm weld was broken and no longer connected to the valve shaft, so the pneumatic actuator was doing nothing to control back pressure, and also a large concentration of soot around shaft seal of valve. I replaced the whole back pressure valve assembly with new BMW part and now no more diesel smell in cabin.
It wasn’t cheap, $606 and installed myself.

I reset the CEL with my scan tool, no codes anymore, just waiting for the "ready for emissions testing" status to turn green after I drive long enough for the vehicle to run through all the longer term systems checks before I can get expired inspection done (New York State..). I also noticed a jump in MPG after replacing the back flow regulator, mixed driving was around 27 before replacement, now same commute to/from work I'm at 31. Also low rpm torque feels improved, and power and shifting is smoother especially at slow speeds.

Now I am happy to continue to wait for the parts to arrive for EGR cooler recall. I purposefully didn't take my x5 to the dealership since I have a lot of boat and travel trailer towing this summer, and I didn't want to risk my vehicle being side-lined and getting some x3 loaner.

I was told October 2022 for my new EGR cooler/updated.

Anyone got their X5 in for this? My Dad just dropped his 535d off (N57) at the dealer and they claim parts are available. Guess I should check realoem or likewise to see if the engines use the same EGR cooler... will contact the dealer and make an appt if they do.
