I build hydroelectric power plants around the world, though mainly in EU and north Africa. They are usually in remote locations up mountain passes hence the justification to the wife for the X5 and double hence why I needed the extra power of the m50d.

I should add, I don't build the plants all by myself, I do have help

What the hell is that sound on a 320 just before the engine start? Sounds like someone is drilling a hole in the fuselage, it lasts few seconds....hydraulic pumps?
Anyway, back on topic...

Just before engine start the air bleed is transferred from the air conditioning to the engine to assist in engine start, the aircraft becomes relatively quite so it becomes easier to notice all the surrounding sounds, the whirring sound will be the different turbine stages starting to rotate, first by the bled air and later during the process with jet fuel.

Depending on which engine is fitted on the aircraft ( typically CFM or the IAE ), you get a different "signature" sound, the 320 engine is known for its sharp whizzing sound from the moment you apply takeoff power until you reach a higher cruise level.

I hope this answers you query, now back to topic

I'm a CPA and CIA (not the cool one). Head of Internal Audit/ Compliance for a Oil/Propane co. 29 years old and my wife and I are expecting our first child Sept 2nd. Hence my reasoning for an X5 .

Wow what an interesting and accomplished bunch! My .02- was a police officer for 23 years, retired as a division commander to attend law school. Now a telecom attorney for a fiber optic company. It's been quite a transition!

its CFM, not talking about turbine spool up sound, more like power drill just before engine startup...sorry for getting off topic, really interested in this.

These will be the igniters, they run a few seconds before the fuel flow starts and thereafter are barely noticeable.

Great thread.

Nice to see people on here with more normal jobs/careers. There was a thread over on the M5 side like this one and everyone was a CEO/Business owner/Senior Exec making millions a year. Depressing to say the least lol.....

I believe what you are talking about that sounds on the center on the plane with a "drilling" noise its the pumps moving fuel between the wings.
