X5 Extended Warranty

Anyone gotten a quote recently for the BMW extended warranty?

As I understand it there are 3 levels of warranty, just trying to canvas what people have been quoted irrespective of level.

Your local BMW dealer will give you a printout based on your VIN.
There are 3 levels of Extended Service Contracts(ESC).
Powertrain Plus(ESC PT+)
Gold(ESC GD)
Platinum (ESC PL)
Pricing is based on the months and miles of coverage required. Coverage is extended by counting from the original in-service date. Maximum is 84 months and 100,000 miles(84M/100K Mls).

I was quoted $4820 for the Platinum 72M/100K ESC. I was told you can put 10% down and make monthly payments for 12 months.

Thanks for the detailed response.

I assume I can go to any dealer to buy the extended warranty?

Yes, any BMW dealer can provide it. But still compare prices between dealers. Keep in mind that you are only eligible when still under the Original Factory Warranty(OFW) of 4yrs/50k. After that only the PT+ is available. So plan accordingly and monitor/calculate your mileage.

From what I've read it cheapest to buy before driving the car off the lot, is that indeed the case?

I just got off the phone with BMW Finance and they confirmed that fact. You are correct. The ESC cost less if purchased at the time of original sale. But the difference is just $400($4420 vs $4820) in my case so there would be no rush to by it initially. In my example I have ~45k on my X5 currently.

^ you can easily negotiate a $400 discount. So no rush indeed.

Remember, BMW extended warranty can be sold remotely by any dealership in the country. It's a commoditized product, so call everyone if you have to, to get the lowest price possible. That said, not all dealerships are willing to negotiate or sell remotely (I believe if your car is out of the initial 4/50, which might require a visual inspection), but I'm aware of a few SoCal based dealers willing to sell these at discounts if you're still in the initial 4/50 period.

Which one of these warranties is equivalent to CPO from a "what's covered" perspective?

I would skip. The comfort access defects traditionally has been FRM issues. They're frustrating to troubleshoot, but the fixes often are simple and even a DIY. I've had a mirror motor issue once on the M3. Again, it's an electrical defect, and something IIRC as simple as pushing the buttons in a certain sequence fixed it....

Granted my information is coming from past generation E70 and E90 ownership....but I can't see BMW deviating that much from how they design these things for current gen cars.

Forget the extended warranty and instead get the extended maintenance contract.

May I ask why you think this is the better option? I've been going back and forth about purchasing an extended warranty on a preowned X5 or getting extended maintenance or both.

Passed on extended maintenance, good indys will more than pay for themselves, in favor of the extended platinum warranty. With the traveling that we do it's piece of mind.

unless you drive on the order of 20k miles a year, this will never pay for itself, ever. doesn't matter if it's X5 or M3...the math never works out, the best scenario I can get is near breakeven (Over buying OEM parts and taking it to a reputable BMW indie) .

So you're saying not worth getting either one for average 12k per year?

If you have the 50i or 35d, absolutely get the 84/100K platinum or gold plan (I'd just go with platinum). For the 35i, you can likely gamble. You can also look at 3rd party warranties, that are cheaper and offer longer coverage, but with 3rd party warranties, caveat emptor. I can personally vouch for Route66 based on my experience, but they don't cover X5s anymore (with good reason, I suppose). None of the 3rd party warranties cover emissions, only BMW plans do.

I ended up getting the gold coverage for 72 months/100k miles. Came it at 4,900 which is a bit of a raping in my opinion. To be fair the extended warranty on my Acura RDX was like 2300 for the same miles and time. Car was about half the cost out, and a hell of lot cheaper to fix.

Not worth the maintenance plan. You need to 2 brake jobs in 2 years just to barely break even.

The extended warranty is for the unknown. I say put the $$$ you would have spent on the warranty in the cookie jar and withdraw as needed for any covered repairs that you now have to pay for. I'll bet you come out ahead as needing a new engine or transmission is a rare item. On the other hand its certain you are going to need to do the maintenance. I have the 7yr/125000 mile plan which gets me 7 LOF's, 2 complete brake jobs, 2 sets of plugs, plus all the other filters, etc

Good independents are fine but with my $80K high tech F15 I like the real thing, BMW authorized service. The difference in labor rate here in Milwaukee is almost nil, so what are you saving.

I am almost at 50k and debating this as well.
So far my maintenance has been 4 oil changes (plus some on my own) and one pair of wiper blades.
Brakes will likely last through 60k and cost around $1000 and an hour of my time. I am really struggling to see how you can break even on extended maintenance. 100k miles means 5 oil changes at $85 of oem parts. That's 850. Let's say they give you a LOT of wiper fluid, diesel additive etc. So round up to $1000. Plus a brake change. Bmw charges close to 2k. It costs under 1k in oem parts. So I'm at 2000 of maintenance.

What other costs come in to get you to break even here? I'm assuming extended maintenance is around 4K.

Thanks..
