Сomparison of BMW brake systems for BMW E70/E71 F15/F16 F85/F86

Hello everybody

I apologize if I write in the wrong thread

I will describe different BMW brake system, So, maybe it will be interesting for you.
And sorry for my English

lets's start

We discus BMW E70 / E71 F15 / F16 F85 / F86.
In general, the geometry of the Carrier and hubs is identical.
Thus, it's easy to upgrade this cars for brake system, the following brake components can be installed on the above-mentioned cars;

Kit 1:
This is upgrade kit with sports brakes M-Performance, in fact it's a brake system from the BMW X5M E70 (X6M E71)
A significant disadvantage is a primitive 4-piston caliper.

Front axle:
- brake rotors 395 * 36, weight about 17 kg!!!
- 4-piston brake caliper, colored blue. weight about 7kg
- brake pads
- brake lines
- wear indicator
- protective covers
- all necessary screws for fastening
The weight of OEM front axle is 54 kg!

Rear axle:
- brake rotors 385 * 24. weight 11,3kg
- single-piston brake caliper with floating bracket
- brake pads
- brake lines
- wear indicator
- protective covers
- all necessary screws for fastening
The weight of OEM rear axle is 32.5 kg

The brake calipers are painted in full blue BMW color.

Kit 2:
Braking system from BMW X5M/X6M F85/F86
From the kit number 1 is characterized by the presence of a high-tech brake caliper and the use of these M brake discs.

Only one problem
Laziness designer BMW (otherwise I especially can not understand why) led to the fact that the geometry of the brake discs 395-36__385-24 BMW X5M E70 and BMW X5M F85 is absolutely identical!
The hole for the adjusting screw on the rear axle does not count ...
Thus, we have a very wide blade of the brake disc and an increased mass.

Front axle:
- brake discs 395 * 36 on pins, perforated and with directional ventilation
- 6-piston brake caliper
- brake pads
- Goodridge brake hoses
- wear indicator
- protective covers
- all necessary screws for fastening
The weight of OEM front axle is 50 kg!

Rear axle:
- brake discs 385 * 24 with perforation, directional ventilation, aluminum hub part, compensation of thermal expansion of the working part of the brake disc
- single-piston brake caliper with floating bracket
- brake pads
- Goodridge brake hoses
- wear indicator
- protective covers
- all necessary screws for fastening
The weight of OEM rear axle is 29 kg

The brake calipers are painted in full blue BMW color.

- 6-piston Brembo brake caliper. it's M5 (or F85) caliper. They are the same!!! They are differ only by OEM adapter
- brake pads
- Goodridge brake lines
- wear indicator
- protective covers
- all necessary screws for fastening
The weight of the OEM front axle is 42.8 kg!

Rear axle:
- brake discs 385 * 24 with perforation, directional ventilation, aluminum hub part, compensation of thermal expansion of the working part of the brake disc
- 4-piston brake caliper. it's porsche panamera caliper. we modify it for this rotors.
- brake pads
- Goodridge brake lines
- wear indicator
- protective covers
- all necessary screws for fastening
The weight of the OEM rear axle is 29-30 kg

On the brake pads front axle offer three options to choose from.

c) BMW high-temperature pads with increased coefficient of friction. Suitable for extremely active driving or for powerful cars. it's carbon ceramic pads from BMW M4.

no, kit #3 - it's not carbon ceramic
i'll write about carbon ceramic later. I need to find my foto

so. for kit #3 for front you only should to buy adapters and lines
http://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1449075

rotors, pads, calipers you may buy in your country, i'll give you an OEM numbers with a great pleasure. new or used - it does not matter

for rear:
i've described this kit
http://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1446014

i have installed this kit #3 for F86 with 800 hp. all was good

if you able to buy any part in your place - it maybe cheaper for you.

about carbon ceramic brakes

there are 3 types of front rotors
- BMW M5 F10 - 410*39
- MB W222 - 420*40
- BMW M4 - 400*38

2 types of rear
- BMW M4 - 380*28
- BMW M5 - 396*26

also there are many different brake carbon ceramic rotors(audi, porsche, BMW F90). I just consider the main options

front caliper is BMW M5 F10(or F85/86)

the carbon ceramic rotors are very expensive.
but
- they practically do not wear out
- they can be changed individually
- they are very light. average weighs 7 kg each
- they brake better
- they can not be dropped!!!!!!!! will be damage on this case
- and nobody can not buy this system in the dealer. its always individual

For those who are lost, just to orient you guys and girls: to have kit #3 on your precious x5 you need to buy rear axle kit (includes everything except pads) for $1600 (plus shipping) and for front axle you'll need his adapters (to be able to install M5 F10 front rotors and calipers) and brake lines for $400 (already includes shipping), but you'll need to buy M5 F10 rotors and calipers on your own here in US/Canada. basically it comes to $2k + shipping and whatever price you can find for M5 F10 front rotors and front calipers in USA. It will be probably more expensive than MPBK (M Performance Brake Kit from BMW OEM), but it will be a notch higher level in performance and better looking (mainly due to drilled rotors and bigger rear calipers)

Yes, you right. thank you

maybe it will be expensive, but it will be better and lighter

i know about brembo kit with 34 mm thickness of front rotor.
it's not a very good decision for heavy X5/X6

This rotor can overheat and begin to beat when braking, maybe i wrong.
But minimum thickness of front rotor M5 F10 is 34,4 mm. OEM parameters is 400*36.
So, brembo rotor is thinner rather than M5 F10

This is a dead thread man. Look like 3 posts above for the entire active thread in "Brembo on a budget"
