Buying new 2018 X5 vs new 2018 X3
I am thinking to buy new 2018 X3 with Premium package and Driver Assistance package.
I am also wondering if it is worth it to buy new 2018 X5 with Premium package and Driver Assistance package instead for about $8000 more. While me and my wife do not really need a bigger vehicle as we own Honda Odyssey. But I am attracted to X5's 6 cylinder engine compared to 4 cylinder engine in X3. Does X5 comes with HUD, navigation, Panaromic moon roof as standard. Also does X5 drives smoother compared to X3. I believe X3 is completely redesigned new generation vehicle starting 2018. Is that case with X5 too Please help me justify the rationale if/ why should I go for X5 instead of X3, even if it means $8000 more than X3. |

I would go with the X5. But the new X3 is nice also.
$8000 should be negotiable since the new X5 should come out next year. You can't go wrong with more space. HUD is not standard, but Nav and Panoramic moon roof is. I am not sure about the new X3, but the previous one, the big screen Nav is optional and even Moonroof is optional.

Real question is if you need the extra space or not?

You are in a X5 forum... of course we (most of us) will say the X5.

The G01 X3 is nearly identical in interior seating room as the current X5; you do gain cargo area.
If you want power, check out the X3 M40i; impressive vehicle. I attended a launch event for the G01; write up here: http://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showth...ight=steamboat If it were me, I'd either wait for the G05 X5 or get the G01 X3 M40i if you need to buy now.

If you aren't in a hurry, I'd wait till the G05 comes out. You should still be able to find a good amount of 2018 X5s on lots and the option for the G01 M40i.
Why not pick from three, rather than two.

Agreed with post above, if you can wait a few more months - see what the new X5 has to offer. I believe it should make it's official debut within the next 3 months with production starting later in the year.

For me an X5 looks much more sophisticated, mature, and have higher luxury feel, etc. in a stock form. The X3 to me looks a little less than what I described above..
I prefer the 5 series over the 3 series and X5 over the X3 just because of these reasons.

Try driving them back to back. I went to the dealer two months ago intent on leasing the X3 30i. When working out the price, the dealer wouldn't budge much off the MSRP and suggested I drive an X5 since he could give a pretty significant discount on one. We drove the two back to back and went with the X5. The X3 has newer technology (better surround camera, lane keep assist, etc). It also gets better gas mileage. However, the X5 with multi-contour seats was significantly more comfortable. Despite the numbers showing them as relatively close in size, the X5 felt much roomier and more substantial. It all around felt like a more luxurious car. Also, despite being similarly quick, the turbo six in the X5 felt smoother and more refined than the turbo four in the X3. Our car spends most of its life on the highway, so the comfort and refinement of the X5 won us over. If it's going to be used mostly in the city, the X3 is a more manageable size. Also, the X3 is sportier and felt significantly lighter on its feet, so if that's important, go with the X3 or get an M-Sport X5. If you do go with the X5, I think the multi-contour seats, driver assistance package, surround view camera and HK stereo are must haves. Our car came with the 20" rims with summer tires, if I had a choice, I would have gone with the 19" rims. I drove X5s with both and the 19" rims offer a noticeably smoother ride and the tire cost goes way down.

I am going through a similar decision making process, and after test driving the X3M 4.0, I now lean towards getting the X5, even if a new design is coming in Oct/Nov. (I lease, so my car has a limited lifespan as far as I'm concerned.) Yes, the 4.0 rockets the X3 from standstill to a big smile very quickly, but I more align with the comfort offering of the X5 you describe. Most of my driving is city, so I won't even be able to take advantage of the X3's performance. Also, the all-season wheel option for the X3 is quite a bit "uglier" than the one for the X5 M-Sport. (Clarification: the wheel options are hardly "ugly," and while I love the 20s for both, I really don't want to be playing the seasonal tire switching game.) |

The biggest problem with the new X3 is that the front facia is ugly. BMW screwed up the design of that car royally imo. Like others have mentioned I would either get the X5 with a massive discount or wait a few months to see what the all new X5 has to offer.
