Heating/Cooling Issue

A few weeks ago, my front passenger vents (the ones in the dash) started to only blow cold air, even when the vehicle is warming up and the other vents in the vehicle are all pumping out hot air. There seems to be no fix.

Turning off the heating/cooling, turning on/off the AC, turning off the vehicle, etc. Nothing seems to stop this. No matter what the temperature setting, the vents on the front passenger side push out cold air.

Any thoughts?

This is a really obvious point, but as you didn't specifically mention it I thought I would - have you checked the position of the adjustment dials next to the vents, the ones with the red and blue markings? If there set to full blue, they will only blow cold air.

Hi...yeah, they are put to red - the warmest setting on every vent. I've tried adjusting them several times and it makes no change.

Was there a resolution to this problem?

I have a strange issue as well. Driver's side wents blow normal warm air, and EVERY 30-40 sec blasting cold air for about 15-20 sec. All dials are to the red.

I had this issue. The dealer reset the climate control control unit and re-calibrated the stepper motors. That's all my paperwork says, it doesn't say what control unit and which motors.

I had a similar issue as well. Instead of blasting of cold air, it was blasting hot air. It required the replacement of the right actuator.

That is identical to what was done to my car yesterday.

Restarting an old thread here. My 2014 F15 40d hasn't missed a beat. Figured it was a Tuesday build for the plant' s manager it was so good. Yesterday, the driver's side dash vents (right hand drive) only blew out cold air. Passenger side was fine. I see stories elsewhere of a 26 hour job to remove dash and replace an actuator! Anyone else have any experience or tips, short of shutting off the vent until summer comes around?

I had the same issue. My dealer took care of it. They did what an earlier post had suggested (recalibrate the actuators). Problem fixed. My dealer says they have not replaced many actuators but it does not (according to them) require removing the dash.

Is this fix available through coding?

Momoboy, many thanks for that. Reassuring to know that there might be a straightforward procedure to correct this. Not doing many miles in COVID Lockdown but I'll raise this with the service department when it's next in for a service.

You need ISTA and ENET cable to calibrate the actuators. The question is why they would be out of range??

Putting this info out there since this problem doesn't seem to happen very often and it might help others. My otherwise faultless 2017 x35i with 42k miles developed a problem similar to others here, with driver's side A/C from the dash going warm every 30 seconds or so, then back to cold. Dealer found that the heater box stepper motors were working fine, but fault codes for "blend flap front left locking detected", meaning the mechanical flap was intermittently binding. They got the flap to work properly by electronically reinitializing it, but they wouldn't guarantee the problem wouldn't return the minute I left the dealership, and recommended replacement. While some of the flaps and motors are accessible without removing the dash, this flap was apparently buried deep and was told the fix required 3 days of labor to access and replace the heater box (distribution housing 64-11-9-291-191) and other related parts to the tune of $5,313. Fortunately, BMW helped with a goodwill contribution (just 2 months past the CPO warranty period) and got the cost to $1,750. I could have just driven it to see how long the reinitializing would work before spending the repair money, but I was not likely to get the BMW $$ help later if I did that, and that cost was less than I would have to pay at a good BMW independent, so I pulled the trigger. Three days of labor turned into over a week, but the job is done, the A/C works as it should, and I don't hear any rattles from a loose dash connection. I was told two master techs helped a third tech on this job.

I have a copy of ISTA and want to try resetting the control module and flaps myself. Anyone have some pointers on where that option is located?

Sorta related, I guess.

I have a code for the heater control valve for the driver side being stuck. I just ordered a water valve and will try replacing it this weekend. My AC blows ICE cold on the passenger side, but only sorta cold on the driver side. No issues with heat on either side.
