If the budget allows go for the X5M. Its better in every way possible.
Those still wondering if the N63 issues are real...just go spend some time on the 5, 6, and 7 series forums as well as the 50i E70. The N63TU in the F15 isn't all that different of a motor and some of the issues are there.

Not enough miles on the n63tu to tell if it's got the same issues. The recent bulletin issued by BMW requiring a battery change at each oil change interval applied to both engines though (n63 and n63tu).

Your V8 M3 was a NA model, not the turbocharged v8 n63 or n63tu engine in the x5. The V8 M3 was bulletproof and widely thought of as one of the most reliable engines. Those days are gone

Thanks and it's a reason I still keep it! I even tried to exchange my m3 for x5M hoping to have sport car and SUV in one - didn't work at all because x5M is not driving as a sport car.

This is my second 50i my first being a 2012. That said, I did have an option of going to a X5M but frankly the difference in price vs. the 50i could not be justified in my opinion. True, you can get a better handling package out of a X5M and more horses also, but in my world, tenths of a second don't mean that much as well as seeing how many g's I can get this vehicle too. If I wanted a killer handling vehicle with horses, I probably wouldn't get a 50i 0r an X5M. To each his own, but I really like the power and response out of the vehicle and who knows, if I want more power, there are plenty of "chip" companies I can choose from, but like any other high performance vehicle, you need a warranty once you past the factory one!

Again it's not turbo charged, the NA is far more bulletproof than the turbo gasoline motors. I.E the E9x 325/328's are farrrrrrrrr more reliable than the 335's. Therefore the N55 is more reliable than the N63 that was in my 750. Still has its flaws but not as many

If I had a choice between a 50i and a M, it's X5 M all day. yes, you can tune and modify the 50i and get similar power but I would rather pay more and get a proper M car. It's kinda like comparing any other cars in the bmw lineup. 550i or a M5? I wouldn't even consider the 550i and go for the M5.

As for me, comfort seats which you can install in 5.0i are much more comfortable than 4 MA Multifunctional seats in x5m. But 5.0i has n63tu engine and n63 series has not so good reputation in terms of reliability.
So... nothing ideal. I think in Europe M50D is the optimal choice to go now. Just my 2 cents. P.S. In Europe standard seats on X5M are Sport seats. As for me, they are more comfortable than 4 MA Multifunctional seats, although Сomfort seats are still better. Last edited by AGV; 07-06-2015 at 01:47 PM.. |

So what did you end up with? Have E92 M3 and 08 Pathfinder,Pathfinder needs replacing. X5.0 vs Cayenne GTS vs JGC SRT.

Not sure if anyone cares, but as the OP of this thread, I ended up getting an Audi RS7. It had enough cargo room for my current needs but had a bit more speed. I still like to peruse these forums though just to keep up on things.

I am in an X5 35i and like the fit, and am considering a move, but would like more power so am considering a 50i or M...but concerned about encountering the same drivetrain problems. I would move back to an Audi (long time Audi owner), but the Audi Q5/7 appear under-powered compared to the BMW options. |

Although I have run flats, I opted for the spare tire option just for peace of mind. There is another option that is not available on the X5M, and that is ceramic controls. To be candid, I really like the look and feel of ceramic controls. The shifter (although an M shifter and transmission), the iDrive controller, and the knobs on the radio and climate control on the X5M just don't have that same elegant look. I think this is just something else to consider when comparing the two vehicles. For me, the 50i has plenty of power. I think I would have to wear a helmet if I drove the X5M! |
