Brakes are squealing - is it salt?
I noticed on cold start that my brakes are emitting a very high pitched squeal when I am pulling out of my covered garage. I notice it for about a mile or so, and then it dissipates. Is this a result of salt build up on the brake pads, wear and tear, or something else. The vehicle has 11k miles and this is the first time I've heard it make any noises.
More curious than worried. |

The brakes on all my Xs always squealed when the wheels were dirty, accumulated brake dust so it could be the salt.
It doesn't seem to be an issue on the F15/16s but the Ms are all squealing like crazy. It makes my ears bleed it's so bad. |

Thanks all, that confirms my suspicion. I guess I'll be like tdubb and just buy a new one that doesn't squeak for 40% under msrp...

Squeals tend to be heard during the first few stops in the morning when the brakes are cold and somewhat damp from dew, and squeals that are heard during the last few feet while coming to a stop are usually nothing to worry about.

I actually get the squeak when I pull out of the garage in the morning sometimes, BUT, it occurs without the brakes applied. Could it be residual contact from the release of the parking brake? It only lasts for a few seconds and then goes away, but it is loud and annoying. Anyone else have this issue?

It's the little layer of rust. Especially prevalent after washing until the rotors get scrubbed after you get going. With the salt and snow, etc., no surprise with the squeaks.
