But I wonder how they diagnosed it was the fuel pump that released the metal into the system, and how they ruled that out as a possibility in my case. I guess I don't truly "know" where the metal in my fuel system came from. |

diesel fuel contamination
So I guess I will not keep my 2014 X5 35d then. It happened to me about a year ago. HPFP failed and car stopped in the middle of the street and I cannot re start it. It was at Fresno BMW for about a week and they say that there was fuel contamination causing the High pressure fuel pump to fail and sent some metal parts to fuel line and injectors. They've replaced all injectors, fuel line and flushed the gas tank. It was covered under warranty so no money out of pocket. It is running good but just don't let the fuel tank go a quarter left on fuel or you will hear a loud mechanical type writer sound from the back of the car once you press on the accelerator. I've notified service 3x about that issue but they say that they cannot replicate it. Love the torque on X5 but just worried down the road for the repair cost.

To top it off, my wife went outside last week to find the sunroof had been inexplicably shattered. That's another $3k that I'm submitting to insurance, as BMW shop said it was not covered by warranty (per google, it's probably a design flaw). I always knew the cost of ownership was high for BMW's and I was fine with that going in, I just didn't expect it to be ~30% of the purchase price over the first 20 months. I realize these are "freak occurrences", but freak occurrences happen, and the cost to fix them is ridiculous. We will probably not own BMW again due to that and the fact that my local BMW dealership is scum and I don't trust them at all, and they can't even live up to the lowest of expectations. Thank goodness for my insurance company. It's a shame, we reallllllllly love the X5 (but for these repairs) and I was going to get an M5 in next few years. |

nice! Just curious, what provision or aspect of the insurance covers this? Just general comprehensive, or did you buy some other riders?

UPDATE:
Here we are, not even a year later, and the fuel system is being replaced for the 2nd time. The vehicle turns 2 years old in about 2 weeks. While in the shop replacing the sunroof (post #48 above), they noticed a CEL. It wasn't on when I dropped it off though. They ran diagnostics and turns out bad fuel in the system, fuel pump and lines being replaced, that's all I got from them so far, I was out of town when they called and left a message. But they did say that it would be covered by BMW. |

Still waiting to hear back from service manager to find out exactly what was wrong, and why this time it's different than last time. |

Definitely didn't fill up at the same place as last time. I haven't used that place in over a year. Since the incident last year we are much more cognizant of where we buy fuel, sticking to only a few nice Shell and Exxon gas stations.

No wonder the Euro manufacturers struggle with selling diesels over your side of the pond! Don't ever recall seeing a similar issue on a BMW diesel (or any other makes diesel for that matter) here in the UK at any time in the past decade or so of reading forums (other than when someone has accidently put the wrong fuel type in the tank by mistake)

Maybe a diesel issue in your area/state ? Still doesn't make any sense. For us diesels everyone suggests filling up where all the big rigs do but that's not always easy or convenient to do. But you can't go on worrying when and if the next breakdown will be ! Myself, I would also cut my losses and move on. Best of luck

Is it me or do most x5 diesel issues from "bad fuel" seem to be happening in the US or even lower states ? I searched but did not find a fraction of these issues in Canada. Coincidence or just fewer members here in Canada ?

All I really know at this point is that BMW is replacing the entire fuel system, and I am replacing the sunroof (via insurance). It's been an expensive 12 months for my insurance company. I'm hoping they don't cancel me, but I expect a rate rise in the very near future. |

Man, that's brutal! I've got 102K on my 35d, no fuel system issues to speak of. Tough luck on the sunroof bud.

What does the fuel filter do then?
I get how stuff in the fuel can clog the injectors, but how does this even happen with the fuel filter in place? Wouldn't the fuel filter trap those particulates? 45k miles on my 2014 X5 35d. Car has been bulletproof.
