Paint
I found a small imperfection in my paint today. First time I had washed my car since taking delivery. It is small on the drivers side door. But appears to be a small spec of dirt under the paint. Am torn about whether I should take it in. I really don't want a repainted spot but not sure if there are any other options. It is small and hardly noticeable unless you wash and wax the car. Total bummer. What would you all do.????? I also don't want to work too hard on the pimple in case I make it worse and get blamed for the whole problem. I may take it in and see what the dealership tells me.

I would not risk getting it repainted. You have a very small chance of the new paint looking better than a small dirt speck you only notice after a wash for a day or two.
If it's in the clear, wet sanding might help but once again, I wouldn't trust the dealers detail department or go to body shop to do it. I would only consider it with a high end detailer that specializes in paint correction. |

I just looked again. Definitely a bubble in the clear coat. Not what should be in an 85k car. I will go to the dealer tomorrow and see what they suggest and move from there.

I would explore paint correction or wet sanding options over repainting the vehicle. If the vehicle was painted at port/vdc from damage it would be disclosed somewhere on the paperwork or dealer system. If it were you may have a leg to stand on otherwise I would not expect your panel and surrounding areas to be painted for free or covered under warranty but worth a shot.

Expecting perfect paint from the factory today is unrealistic. Thin paints, sprayed on by robots, with no correction in between unless there is an overspray or a drip... perfect is not going to happen. Quit obsessing and enjoy the X5!

I little disingenuous to ask me to stop obsessing. Everyone on this forum obsesses and enjoys their cars. I am enjoying my car but just wanted to see what people thought the probable solution would be. I am inclined to not do anything but if there is a reasonable fix then I want to do it. Thanks to all....continue obsessing.

I'm sure a detailer can have that paint correction done pretty easily and not need to repaint the panel.

I have like a multiple of these on my hood. I suspect the hood was damaged before delivery and the hood repainted during inspection.

Not a big deal. Detailer should do the job. You just got the car so you care more for imperfections but as you spend more time you will not care too much about it

well, sooner or later road debris will cause more paint chips, dents and dings as you drive it more, unless you put it on showroom display only. Just enjoy the car and save the $ until the new one comes out.

This imperfection can't be caused by robots and can't pass inspection. This is a careless human repair job.

Isn't this easily fixed by polishing?? As someone else said, have it repaired and send the bill to BMW, if it really matters that much.

I would be reluctant to paint the whole panel, panel matching is very difficult and can result in that panel not matching the rest of the car. I would have a professional paint shop look at it and see what can be done with removing the dirt and touching up that spot then wet sand etc. Personally Id rather have a small spot that doesnt quite match rather than an entire panel.

Maybe it's a cultural difference, but in Southern Europe beautiful ladies used to stick a silken "grain de beauté" on their faces - the idea was that absolute perfection is soulless and not human.
Enjoy "your" special car with this almost invisible imperfection known only to you, that makes it different in a world of increasingly "perfect copies", robot built without any personality. And when it gets lightly nicked and dinged, its again "your car", proudly accompanying you in your life adventures, protecting you at its cost. Drive it hard but respectfully and take great care of its mechanical health - our magnificent cars want to be driven rather than manicured. |
