Older thread but I have a question, I have the RSE and I am able to use it with my iphone 6s using the lighting to HDMI to Composite convertors.
Would you be able to use the USB for something like Chromecast or Amazon Fire TV?

I was watching a "very" successful artist's interview on TV (Top Gear) sometime back!
The guy has retired now and lives on a ranch. He has many kids and drives a Mercedes Van. Jeremy Clarkson was shocked to know that he drove a Van and that too without the entertainment package i.e. DVD screens etc.! The guy replied he will never get it ever, period! He said that's how he got his inspiration from! Sitting and looking out, watching people outside, observing the environment etc. sitting in the back with his parents driving! Let kids develop their creativity side of their brain than to handicap them with crap movies/ video games etc.! Or get the entertainment package, there will be less competition for the next generation

We just received our MY17 F16 with RSE, of course, it didn't come with headphones.
I haven't seen any updates in the thread regarding what brand Bluetooth headphones will work with the RSE. My salesman said any BT headset, but I have tried three different brand BT headphones, and none will pair. Can anyone that has RSE with BT share what brand of wireless headsets work? Or do we have to spend the $$$ for the BMW brand headsets?

I have the rear entertainment in my X5 but mine came with the OEM headsets. I haven't tried to pair any other Bluetooth device before but I'll give it a shot with my Bluetooth ear buds I use for the gym just to see.
You would think any Bluetooth compatible headphones "should" work. |

Can you post a picture of the headsets that you have (OEM), I have see two pictures of headsets when I search for the OEMs. Just want to make sure I'm getting the correct headsets. Thanks!

I tried to pair my Audkey Bluetooth ear buds I use for the gym...sadly no dice. It does say to use compatible devices only. Guess you'll have to look in the manual to determine what they consider compatible!
Also on a side note I would warn anyone with RSE to be protective of the remote provided. Ie don't let your kids break it or lose it, it's $350 to replace. Mine happened to stop working and was replaced under warranty but I checked on purchasing a spare and was not impressed with the price of the remote. System is effectively useless without the remote. |

Guys, another question for the RSE! I have a twin of 1 year old. They just switched to a straight up childseat and I've re-installed the screens (I had to detach them because the baby seats wouldn't fit anymore with screens attached). I've got a USB stick with several dvd's and avi files. They all play just fine. But how can I get the audio to play over the car speakers? I've got the wireless headphones, but since my kids don't understand (yet) that they have to keep them on to listen, I would prefer the car speakers to play the movie on (I know what you think... newbe dad, thinks he can stand it to listen to Dora the Explorer for a couple of hours straight.... :-)). Is that possible? I couldn't figure it out via the front iDrive or remote control. One (ugly) option would be to plug a 3,5 jack from left or right RSE to the front AUX. I've tried the USB in the front and rear port, but front only play's the movie/audio in front (not in rear), and rear only plays the movie, but audio only via headphones.
I was just enabling the DivX/VCD stuff in RSE_HU_NBT and have seen some Bluetooth paramters, maybe for the people trying to pair their non-bmw headphones, the trick might be in there? And is it possible to attach a (non-external powered) USB hardrive to the USB port instead of a stick? |

Next mod is to redirect the USB port in the rear and extend it to the center console in the front. Otherwise my USB stick will probably break out of the socket being unprotected in the rear. I think about unplugging the port (round connector) and put a cable on it with female usb. Nothing will be visible in the rear while the usb is plugged in. Have to find a way to get the rear climate control apart. |

My solution to using the rear USB port for kids movies was to get one of these very tiny microSD to USB3 adapters. No worries about the kids breaking it off like a regular USB stick.

I've thought about such a solution. Also checked for an angled extension USB cable. But the cover still has to be open and since they are kids, something is bound to get broken. :-) I'll just try to open the rear console and unplug the cable from the back of the panel/connector. If I'm unable to achieve that, I'll go for your solution and hope for the best. :-)

Hello guys, in fact I'm buying 2014 F02 LCI in a few days I've been digging on the compatibile headphones too.
Below I quote what I've just found in the new 7 series G11/12 manual: "The infrared transmitter unit for the headphones was replaced by 2 radio interfaces for connection of 2 wireless headphones (KLEERŪ standard)with the F01/F02 LCI in July 2012." Hereby probably all the newer RES are transmitting audio in this standard. I will be looking for KEEN aftermarket headphones, cause the BMW ones are way too expensive (I need 3 of them). Hope it helps :-) |

After some research I found the other brands headphones to be about the same price with no guarantee to work with BMWs RES. One of the dealers offered me a nice discount when buying 3 pairs, so I'll stick with genuine headphones.

Yes, the new RES uses the KLEER standard instead of Bluetooth or IR headphones. It's a standard developed by Sennheiser, Harmon, TDK, SMS, etc.
Very expensive, but any brand KLEER should work. The ones designed for the 7 series work and are nicer (not for kids). I believe those are made by Harmon/AKG I bought some speakers designed for laptops on amazon that plug into the 3.5mm jacks and attached them to the screens instead. My kids can hear the audio and I can still listen to music and they don't have to worry about putting headphones on.
