Towing and Tranny
Good morning, all. Just want to get everyone's opinion on this. I plan to pull a small trailer with our golf cart on it. While I'm nowhere near exceeding any weight limits, I want to poll the audience on where to set the tranny while towing. Sport mode? Comfort mode, manual shift? Comfort mode, no manual shift?
When towing my camper with a half-ton truck, I would use manual shift and just not let the tranny shift into OD. Burned more fuel, but I'm towing so....... I'm thinking sport mode so I could set the cruise and the tranny not have to hunt for gears. Just wondering what the tranny temp would do running 70mph, in 6th gear? |

I put it in manual mode as if it’s in “D” you’ll find the transmission quickly takes the engine out of the power band and then you’re lugging the motor. I found keeping the engine between 2-4K felt relatively low stress.
Tranny has a cooler, so I wouldn’t worry about the temp unless you’re really abusing it. Also, you’d have to have a plug in device to track the temp. |

If you are really worry about tranny temp there is a simple and cheap way to monitor it.
Get Bimmerlink App and BT OBD. Bimmerlink has a list of recommended OBD adapators. On App can select several measurement points include water, engine and tranny temp. |
