Black trim to replace discolored shadow-line trim
http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=833785
The above thread illustrates that I am hardly alone in the discoloration of the trim on my F15. The question that I would like help with is what happens if I replace the trim I have with black? This was suggested to me during my driving trip (that is ongoing) but with the caveat that I should consider a black grille. At the moment, I am not inclined to change the grille so what would the black trim look like on my white F15?

I used to used a car wax on the shadow line and a simple wipe off removed the marks easily. I currently have the shadow line on my Jag and over the last 6 years never had an issue as I did with my old X5. Hope this is not something I'm going to get on my new X5 again |

I found that the heavy detergents used in touch-less car washes would cause discoloration and an odd purple/rainbow effect on the Shadowline trim. Even though I don't use these car washes often, one instance and I would be forced to polish and wax the trim when I got home to get the marks off.

just google this. You can buy rolls and rolls of black gloss vinyl for cheap, and it looks really good. Use youtube for DIY instructions, but generally, b/c it's smaller surface areas, it's as easy and sticking it on and forgetting it, no need for heat gun.
It's not different than those people "blacking out" their emblems with black gloss vinyl.

My 2015 mineral white metallic x35d w/ shadowline trim is 3.5 years old now and am really starting to see issues that many mention regarding the "rainbow effect" on more than half of the shadowline trim pieces surrounding the windows (ugh). I've spent the past hour researching forums and online posts and it seems like about half the people experiencing the issue resolve it with various polishing agents/compounds such as Mequiar's (ScratchX, Cleaners Wax, #7 or #9) or Mother's FX Synthetic Wax. The other half either don't do anything about it or try to get BMW to replace under warranty (read about 3 people or so that said BMW replaced it for them as a one time warranty/courtesy). I have 4 months left on my factory 4 yr/50k mile warranty and would like to complain to the dealer about this during my next (and final) included oil change service in a couple weeks.
My questions are: 1. Has anyone had BMW replace the shadowline trim under warranty? 2. (follow-up) If so, how did you convince them to do it? 3. (follow-up) Did they replace all the window trim or only the affected pieces? |

I just showed my SA the colour differences and he put the claim in. Took about a week to get approved and replaced. Now with the new ones in you can really tell there is a difference between them.

I would suggest if you can find a bottle of plastx at your locate auto part store and give it a whirl. I recently noticed my Msport shadowlines were showing water stains and the purple/rainbow effect. Its been over a week and still glossy like factory plus all the purple/rainbow effect along with water stain is all gone.
I buffed it by hand with a microfiber pad and some elbow grease. |

This is what mine looks like. The piece on the left was replaced, went today to see about the others. Pretty sure passenger side will all be replaced, not sure about drivers side though. Would be great if they just replaced the rest so I don't have to keep going back.

So I had that purple rainbow look and decided to tackle it today. Minimal effort with the McGuires 105 and gone. Stuff works easy. Just put some on and use a microfiber rag 🤙🏽
No scratched what so ever. I wouldn't try a machine though, it's fine using your fingers or thumb. |

So after a few days of rain out here, I snapped a picture so you can see that there are watermarks on the glass but not on the trim. I did not use any sealers or wax as I want to see it not using anything will still maintain the natural black look without fading or aging 🤙🏽 No water marks and that rainbow watermark look is completely gone. 105 is the way to go. |
