Don't take this the wrong way, but if you cant find the drain plug, you really have no business changing your oil.

- Fuel filter - diesel is every 4th oil change, not sure on the gassers - Cabin Air Filter - every 2 years - Engine Air Filter - every 5th engine oil change For the cheap cost on some of these, no harm in doing these replacements sooner.

Couple of things I wanted to add to this thread. First, thanks to OP for posting - GOOD STUFF!
The 5,000 mile oil was very sooty to say the least. I captured some of the oil for a Black Stone analysis to know more if a 5k interval is necessary. I'm wondering if a more frequent filter only change would help in lieu of oil & filter. Added Lessons Learned: 1.) With the diesels having the service dipstick, I used a fluid extractor and I never had to remove the drain plug. I also used the suction to get all the old oil from the filter housing. Worked perfectly! 2.) BMW oil kits come in Liter bottles. Diesels hold 6.5 liters - don't use all 7 Liters or you will get a MAX oil level warning. Ask me how I know. 3.) 2016 and newer use 0w-30. Older versions variants use 5w-30 Additional tool suggestions: 1.) Amazon - 'Motivx Tools 27mm Low Profile Oil Filter Socket'. It was $13 prime and fit like a factory oil wrench. 2.) Griot's - MULTI-FLUID EXTRACTOR ITEM# 10115. $99 and it can be used for oil, transmissions and brakes. |

I've used mityvac for years on my Mercs oil trans and brake with both my pneumatic and hand pump. Love them to death and slightly cheaper on Amazon I think

I am letting the dealer do their thing, about every 10k miles. At the 5k in-betweens, I am doing oil changes. On my 2016, they fill with 0w-30. I use 5w-30. Maybe it's in my head, but the engine is quieter with the 5w-30.
Based on my results (and yours) 5k is a great interval for oil changes. Also, I just did the air filter "for fun" at 20k miles. It was quite dirty. They want to do 30k on air filters, but I think 15k is more like it. Changing the air filter is very simple, but it is an expensive part... like $65 or so!

Guys as a follow up to my 5k interval oil change from new, attached is my blackstone oil report. Looks like even though the oil was sooty and black, the lab guys don't see any reason to change it at 5K.
I'm thinking for the next test, I'll go with 10K oil change, but do a filter ONLY change midway at 5k. A $23 is service better than $90 service; especially if it proves the oil change is not needed. PS> I'm not looking to start a debate on long vs. short oil change intervals, just providing facts from my oil analysis. |

Good news is - whatever you answer on my previous questions - I have a best solution for you: 1. Filter is easy - Mann (there's nothing better): https://www.amazon.com/Mann-Filter-H...s=+11427566327 2. Oil depends what you want really. If you plan to chip tune your 35i - and considering that engine is hot engine - I would go for the best of the best (has to be ester based oil): https://www.amazon.com/Red-Line-1540.../dp/B004BORLDA You are welcome! P.S. For your 35i you'll need: 1. 17 mm socket to remove and tighten the drain plug 3. 27 mm socket to remove the filter cap + 16 flute 86.4mm oil filter removal tool https://www.amazon.com/Motivx-Tools-...r+removal+tool 4. 7 quarts (or 6.5L) oil + filter Last edited by DuSh; 09-18-2017 at 11:06 AM.. |

Just bought it last week it has 29000 miles, next service is due @32000 miles, still under warranty, planning on keeping couple years. Planning on tunning and chip, but not at the moment, currently installing paint protection film on it and ceramic coating on the rims. But I want to do an oil change myself because of previous car buying experience, when i was told that maintenance was done being it was certified, it was BS, air filter was durty as f.... With that being said, what other oil you recomend other than the one stated above?? Also, can you shared a link about tunning and chip, am new to the forum and getting to know the forum. Thanks again for your help |

The OP photos show a black plastic cover over the bottom tray opening. My car does not come with this cover. Does anybody know the part number to this? Realoem did not show this cover.

That's it, thanks! I did a break in oil change and I know it did not come with it from the factory. Non diesel also has the same cover according to realoem, I just wasn't looking in the right place.
