SMOG Check?

My California license renewal just came in the mail and it states I have to get a SMOG Certification. As I have leased cars most of my life, this is the first time I have ever been required to get this done. Is this because I have a 35d (diesel)? I always thought SMOG checks were for older cars. This is a 2015 35d.

Per California DMV Website ....
My car is new. Am I still required to get the biennial smog inspection?
Vehicles registered in areas subject to the biennial smog certification program are required to submit evidence of a smog certification every other renewal period. Starting January 1, 2005, owners of vehicles six or less model years old will pay an annual smog abatement fee for the first six registration years instead of being required to provide a biennial smog certification. The registration renewal notice mailed to you by the department will indicate if a smog certification is required. If a smog certification is required and you have not had a smog inspection, you may still pay your registration fees to avoid any late fees. However, you will not receive your new registration or year sticker until the smog information has been received by DMV.

NOTE: Upon initial registration, nonresident,

Diesel powered vehicles 1998 model year and newer with a Gross Vehicle Weight rating (GVWR) of no more than 14,000 lbs, and specially constructed vehicles 1976 and newer require smog certification. The six or less model years old rule does not apply to these vehicles

This must be new. I have been driving new cars on 2/3/4 year leases for 15+ years and never got a SMOG check.

I read somewhere this rule has been in effect in California since 2010 for diesel cars/trucks.

Always thought it was after the 6th even year (so 7 years if you buy an odd MY) only applied to gasoline.

Absolutely ridiculous that a 2015 should have to have any smog check. Once again California out of control tree hugger liberal bullshit. That state should just fall in the ocean already...

Easy there fellow. There are a lot of us conservatives living out here in California. Unfortunately we are not in the majority. Many of us simply cannot leave for one reason or another (family, employment, timing, etc). Don't wish our state to fall off the ocean. At least until BMW comes out with a decent watercraft for us to buy.

New York state also requires checks every single year… are you wishing our state would fall into the ocean too?!

Oh yeah, you wish there was an ocean Illinois could fall into instead of a bunch of lakes!

I did that last year on my 2014 x5 35D

It is mostly inspection and it cost about $100 with a coupon, there is no smog for diesel. Took about 10 min.
