Idrive not playing apple music from iphone 5S

I bought a 2017 X5 a few weeks ago and have been unable to get idrive to play music from my iphone 5S. I do not have apple car play and I am trying to play the music via blue tooth connection by selecting my iphone as the media source. I have tried updating the software on my phone and re-pairing the phone to the car, but still I am not able to get it to work. After re-pairing the phone to the car, idrive at least recognizes the music that is on my apple music list on my phone, but it will not play any of it when I try to select a song or an album. I called BMW NA and spoke with a so-called "genius" but he just suggested that I try to re-pair the phone again. He did at least confirm that the software in the X5 is up to date. Any suggestions on how to fix this would be appreciated.

So what happens when you try? Do you get an error message? No sound? No option for BT media in iDrive? Making mine work was seamless, much easier than other cars I've driven / paired my phone to. That said, I am streaming via Spotify...but yours should be the same.

In case you didn't know, you still need to "unpause" with the round power button for the music to play. Otherwise it will just be in limbo with the whole unknown song 0/0 thing.

Can you explain further? The Idrive screen says "no information available unmute" when I select my iPhone in the media menu. It cannot find any music on the phone, but it recognizes the phone. I did notice what looks like a pause symbol next to the blue tooth symbol on the Idrive screen, but I have no idea what that means or how to fix it. Strangely, after un-pairing the phone yesterday and then turning the phone off and re-pairing the phone, it started working normally and worked this morning when I went out to the car to drive to work, but this afternoon when I got back into the car to drive home, it was not working and the unpairing and re-pairing after turning the phone off did not fix it.

I've seen instances where iDrive will see the phone, but not let you play music, or select the phone for that matter. It's a strange circumstance and seems to happen about 1 out of 5 times for me.
