BMW X5 40e PHEV Level 2 Home Charging Issues
UPDATE 03/18/2017: our car was updated with the latest EME/KLE software and the issue has been resolved.
Thought it was only me, but many reports online for owners are surfacing that the 40e's are having issues charging using home based level 2 EVSE chargers. The issue appears to be the sensitivity with the 40e when initializing the handshake with the EVSE charger. The 40e would not charge and produce a blinking red ring with the message 'Unable to Charge'. The behaviours reported seem to be common as: - 40e works consistently at any commercial lvl2 240v EVSE - 40e works consistently with provided Clipper 120v EVSE - 40e does NOT work reliably at home on various 240v lvl2 EVSE - some owners went as far as replacing the 40e onboard charger with the same effect Wokaround -> start charging with the provided level1 charger and once th charging has been established, swap out the lvl1 charger with the lvl2 240v charger. This is obviously not acceptable and is a design fault. EVSE chargers reported with this issue include: ChargePoint Home 32A, Bosche PowerMax, JuiceBox Pro 40 Any other 40e owners here expericing this issue? BMW X5 40e PHEV Level 2 Home Charging Issues
I am facing the same Scenario. There is another thread that is discussing this. Your work-around works with the Chargepoint but not with the Flo. When I checked with BMW locally, they dont have any notification of a TSB in Canada. So waiting for this to be resolved.

Hmmm. I have a ClipperCreek 240v home charger and after 2 months of charging, it would intermittently fail to charge. The fix that worked for me was to lift the handle slightly until the blue charging light started and then it would charge fine.
I thought it was the charger, but wonder if it's the car. If anyone is having issues with failed charging, try lifting the handle until the handshake succeeds. |

There's more information about the red ring of death charging fault here:
http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...=950436&page=2 https://www.facebook.com/groups/BMWi...h=cnJvZA%3D%3D BMW seems to acknowledge that there is a problem with the X5 40e's onboard charger (KLE) being hyper sensitive to fluctuations from pure sine wave for some 240VAC electric supply. There is a TSB and there will be a software update fix that is supposed to be released March 2017. It seems that not all BMW dealerships are up to speed on this, so if your local dealer is clueless, call BMW NA. This problem has nothing to do with the make or model of L2 EVSE which is just a pass through for electric power from the outlet. Changing EVSEs will likely not eliminate the RRoD. Nor is it likely there an true fault with the residential 240VAC supply from the power company. Some small fluctuations are considered normal. The issue with residential vs. commercial EVSE is that homes run on 240VAC double leg split phase (2 legs of 120VAC). Commercial EVSEs commonly are 208VAC three phase.

Not disputing the detailed root cause work that's been formulated for the issue, but if anyone has the issue I recommend trying my hack to see if it resolves the problem.
Since lifting the handle slightly until the handshake, I haven't had the red ring of death. |

ISSUE RESOLVED via SOFTWARE UPDATE
Happy to report that we brought our 40e to have this issue looked at and there was a new software update for the EME ready. Took about an hour to update and the car now charges flawlessly!
All 40e owners should get their software updated. |

That software update is for everyone or only for those with charging issues? |

X5 charging issue with Tesla Tap Adapter
I recently purchased an X5 and purchased the Tesla Tap adapter. I plugged it into the 220 specialized outlet I use for my tesla. My X5 does not seem to be charging. Any suggestions? The green lights on the tesla charge box are lit up.

I think you need a dedicated L2 charger instead of the OEM charger. Did you mean you just plugged the OEM charger into a 240V outlet?
