Brake service: What mileage did you change your brakes?
Current kms 30k.
My OBC says the 'rear's' need service in 8000kms and fronts in 14000km. I do 80% hwy. Is the OBC accurate? Has anyone taken their x5 in and just got the brakes inspected and didn't need a change?

Well I assume if the CBS reads brakes need they will replace them if under the maintenance (at least it was on my E70). They replaced pads and rotors even though both still had some life left. If you're out of maintenance, I would just skip the dealer and go indy/self.

based on my experience with the CBS on the E70 X5, it's pretty accurate. When I got the big red warnings on changing my front rotors, when I did change it, I used the standard caliper measuring tool and behold, it measured exactly at the required minimum thickness for the OE rotors.
Pads still had some life left, but I changed it out anyways.

In that case, I would skip the dealer and do it yourself. Just take off the wheel and check when the CBS says you need to replace.

some manufacturers are okay if you change your pads, then turn your rotors...BMW doesn't do that. Should you turn your rotors if they're above their minimum thickness? Up to you...it's not like turning rotors is free either, and you're not extending the service life all that much if you're owning the car for the long term

Some cars like Mercedes and Porsche I noticed the pads are couple mm smaller than the disc itself, so after the rotor disc wears down you get this little lip. I don't know why they do that, but I find you need to replace the pads and the rotor.
But on our BMWs the pads seem to be about the same size as the disc, so it's all worn down, therefore unless my rotors are under a safe thickness I see no reason to replace them.

I'm really tempted, but then I'll just end up with metal sitting in my garage. For example I have enough motor oil and filters lying around good for another five oil changes.

I reset the service indicator twice on mine (before swapping out to the MPBK). Lots of pad left when I pulled them off, could've got another 15-20k out of them.

This isn't new. They've been doing it since I have owned BMWs (1994). They're designed to wear at about the same rate under "normal" usage. No one I know has "normal" usage.
