These plug in hybrids would have more appeal if the range was more like 100 miles. Range could be increased by a ground up design that cut 1000 lbs off the weight. We also need the next generation of batteries to arrive for commercial use. The Lithium Ion batteries add considerable weight and cost.

Exactly. That's why I said nothing makes sense for everyone. There are very few one-size-fits-all solutions. But, I would like to re-iterate the difference between a hybrid and a plug-in hybrid. Very big difference. I have absolutely no use for a "regular" hybrid. Thousands more $ for just a few more mpg. Also, because of where I live, (The Western US) a straight up electric only car wouldn't work for me because I would have money tied up in a car that I couldn't leave town with, due to the wide open spaces here... hundreds of miles between potential charging sites. A plug-in hybrid solves the limitations of both a standard hybrid and an all electric vehicle. In other words, it is the best of both worlds, without the downside of either. For me. Not for everyone.

This is true. The farther the range and the better the performance in all electric mode, the more useful and the more appeal. But, like the internal combustion engine, which has taken a hundred years to evolve and advance to the point they are today, this technology will continue to evolve and make technological advances. All electrics probably will get there someday soon, but they are not there yet, for my purposes. This new x5 could possibly be just good enough to be useful in my situation. But yes, it can only get better over time.

Plugins are good bridge between all-electric and ICE car, but I would not really call it "best of both worlds"
Plugin, by nature, add extra things to break and extra weight to carry
All that with less interior space

I'm now really disappointed with X5e not offering 3-rd row

P.S. As was already mentioned, Volvo is now looking more attractive

X5 design in general is boring. T8 looks nicer IMO.
First generation X5 was my favorite by far.
I guess today's X5 has turned into a football mom's car.

The problem is battery energy density. This X5 goes a little more than 10 miles on battery. For a stay at home parent who makes only short trips to and from home it is an electric car. For someone with a long commute, especially without a charging station when at work, it is an underpowered gas car. The reality is this technology is in the early stages but being forced into production by regulators.

I bet it would not go very far on battery during Houston's hot and humid summer.

What happened to 19 miles they have been advertising???

My wife works 8.5 miles from home and this would have been perfect, daily commute on electric only.

13 miles seems sort of pointless. 30 miles would have been perfect for most people. As already mentioned this is meant for the stay at home soccer moms I guess.

Wait, do you mean soccer? Or futbol?

It only looks like that if you don't option it correctly... Same as the previous 2 generations, same as most SUV's...

On this e, I'm on the fence. 13 miles is sufficient for me to get to the train when I commute, and for my wife to get to work. But we use that storage compartment where the battery will be quite a bit on vacations. And I'm not yet sure how I feel about these powerful batteries so close to my family so frequently. When they build one from the ground up (electric SUV), I will be in favor of the utility, but still a bit in fear of the potential health risks.

This is just PR. Get a Japanese hybrid or a German diesel. Plug-in-hybrids are just PR, a stepping stone to FCV.

Toyota the largest seller of hybrid cars, does not sell any PHEV, except that one Prius, but it does not really sell, it is also only PR.

I agree in as much as plug-in hybrids only being yet another step towards a full alternative to burning fossil fuels to propel a car, but if a bit of 'PR' saves me over £21k I'm all in favour of it (see my earlier post)

Been following this thread, and am very interested in replacing my 2010 X5d with a PHEV.. The success of this "e" will depend on the pricing.. If BMW/NA repeats the "diesel" intro and prices it $5000 above the "i" then few will take it.. as was the case with the intro of Diesels..

BMW/NA Had to offer the $5000 "Eco credit" for the 2009/2010 diesel X5 to get them moving.. now the Diesel is 30% of the X5 volume (USA), with at $1500 premium above the 3.5i .. Also there was a $1800 FED Tax credit at the time for diesel, Which made the 2010 diesel cheaper than a comparable 3.5i. I was happily sold then.. and 106,000 miles later.. still happy, but time to upgrade..

We will see how much they want to sell this "e"...

electric heating or electric-augmented heating

This tech seems pretty cool to me. Mating a torq-ey electric motor with a hydrocarbon motor makes sense from a performance standpoint, and all things being equal, I'd rather burn less fuel than more. This tech could also enable something that I think could be very useful - electric heating or electric-augmented heating. In my opinion, one of the least comfortable times with any car is getting in it when it is very cold. Electric seats just don't seem nearly enough when it is below zero F. You sit there watching engine temp gauge rise all too slowly, waiting for some warm air for the cabin. It would be much better if the car has electric (instant on) heat for the cabin. This could be accomplished with all-electric HVAC or, in what I would call electric-augmented heating, an electric heater could be installed in the heater core so the the car can supply electric heat initially and then switch over to waste heat from the engine when that warms up.

This car is advertised as being able to run in all electric mode for the first 20 miles. Does anyone know how the car heats the occupants in all-electric mode? Does this mean that it will have some sort of electric HVAC system? Does this mean instant heating upon turning on the car? If so that would be very desirable.

X5 40e: Qualify for US tax credits?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

An email to FuelEconomy.gov got a quick reply that the government has not yet decided if the X5 40e will qualify for a tax credit.

By the IRS formula, it's 9kwh battery would appear to meet criteria for about a $3,500 credit.
http://www.irs.gov/Businesses/Qualif...ter-12-31-2009

Any thoughts?
