No Active Steering (AS) Option for 2017 model

My dealer just called me to notify me there is no AS option for 2017 model. I already placed the order, he was able to enter it in the system and was informed that it is not possible, he made some calls and he was told each time it was discontinued. Am upset about this because this is a GREAT option imo and it really contributes to the steering feel of the car, again imo. AS was hydraulic based as oppose to the poorly done electric steering AND it also served a purpose meaning its functionality... I can't even type how upset I am because I traded in a car that I love to drive (F15 with AS) and now they cancelled this option. WAY TOOO LATE for me to back off from the purchase now unfortunately.....

Also AS is in the price list and factory is telling him that is a mistake!

Enough venting...If anyone here has some inside info, please do share, perhaps there are changes to the current steering system (enhancements) which don't make AS functioning. WHat I am afraid is that they've discontinued it because not so many people took that option.

Sorry for the rant.

How can it be too late to back off if they cant deliver what you ordered? This is like being told on the day of delivery that they were out of the black paint you ordered and you have to deal with getting a pink car instead.

The dealer was nice and pre-ordered the car for me in order to get early 2017 model production, AS was in the order and now BMW is saying it is discontinued. Already negotiated the trade-in for the current (my current F15 now feels even more awesome). It is not the dealers fault for all of this, pure BMW unexpected nonsense. Will add option comfort access instead (which I was considering anyways) and hope that BMW has something replacing, or something better than the Active Steering. If they just cancelled it because of reasons like a) not too many people ordering (which I think is not the case from what I hear) b) warranty costs if it breaks down c) assembly line, parts - whatever costs THEN I FEEL DISAPPOINTED. It is an awesome system, plus it makes driving the car awesome.

is not there going to be whole different steering setup on 2017 then? so thats why they dont have AS option?

perhaps they realized that currently it sucks big timethe standart steering on F15 in terms of BMW feel of precision steering, far worst than any BMW I had in the past.....

Finally someone with a 2017 order. Have you got any other confirmations on other charges like 21" wheels, color, interior color, trim? There won't be a LCI but I keep hearing about some sort of update but I don't know when but I guess for 2017 since AS is no more.

AS was never an option on M50d so I have never tried it. I'm fine without it but if you have it on your current car then it is some sort of downgrade. I just hope the standard stearing is improved so AS kinda isn't needed anymore.

BMW product expert gave me the following reasons for AS being discontinued or as he called it "dumped": a) worldwide only 3% of all X5s had AS option b) 60% of AS equipped cars had some work done under warranty (AS related). There are no known improvements for the steering at this point. scott26 mentioned a light LCI, i dont think he had 2017 model in mind (apart from idrive 5.0, touchscreen, wireless charging, wifi hotspot and Apple Carplay). From what I could see the following changes are for 2017 in addition to the "known things". New color Apple Cedar for non M sport is available, color is kinda beige looking, elegant but far from what i like. Msport 20" wheels can now be had in black too - same design just in black. Most people on this forum have these 20" wheel upgrade and these are the same design but in black color. I checked trims and other colors - no change there. Right rear mirror is now not dimmed if you tick the auto dimming option, there is also a different more healthy/eco stuff used for the aircondition unit (not sure what that is but was informed by the dealer). To conclude AS is awesome and I will miss it. I did a test drive of the M50d (awesome car, crazy torque but...)and had no desire for the car as it had no AS option, even wit lh Mservotronic the steering was miles away from my old E71. So 40d would have been an ideal (lets call it compromise). I ended up getting a 30d again and added almost everything I wanted. Again I doubt i would have gone through all thing again if i knew AS being discontinued, wish they sticked to it or improved it for at least two more years. Again my current car is pretty awesome but it lacked two things i wanted (Comfort Seats and Panorama Sunroof). Cheers

Probably. M-sport always limits your options.

Thanks, studied it all last night. Funny how no mention of AS but its not there. Not listed in German pricelist. Oh well...

I just updated my order (X6 xDrive35i) with the 2017 price/options list.. (Military and Diplomatic Sales) - Est delivery Sept 16

A few notable changes to my X6 build:
Base Price increased for me - $800
M Sport package decreased $900 - the black anthracite headliner is now standard.
M Sport package now has an option for the 20" 469M in Black
Premium Package increased ($250) - added wireless charging and Wifi hotspot
I also see an Apple Car Play compatibility for $300 (asked to add it to my build, but have not received confirmation yet)

Active Steering is listed as option #217($1550) cannot be ordered with 5DP (Parking Assistant)

Pricelist does state AS but cannot be ordered. The dealer made an order, I signed it but when reached factory AS was declined. It's a mistake in the Military and Diplomatic Sales price list, I checked with a few sources (even in different countries). As I mentioned German pricelist does not even mention it.

I ordered my X5 with active steering ("AS"). To be candid, it was an expensive option and I am not so sure I would order it again. I reported in another thread that the seals on my AS unit began to leak and the entire steering rack had to be replaced (my X5 was six months old and less than 11,000 miles on it so the AS steering rack was replaced under warranty). So, I am one of those 60% that had AS related work done under warranty. As I said in my prior post, these X5s are complex machines and they are bound to have some problems, even for an expensive BMW. I still love my X5. It puts a smile on my face every time I drive it.

I honestly might not get another BMW if they don't offer AS (and don't subsequently fix the steering). It's one of the best available options and completely makes the X5. Very disappointed to hear this.

I'm kinda over it. Was really upset and now looking forward to a new car. Folks have no idea because i think most dealer demo cars do not have AS option. In Austria (where I used to live), most dealer cars had it and sales guys really recommend(ed) AS. I have to say why i even got into BMW. I friend (girl) bought herself a new E46 coupe, i thought car was nice but I preferred Audi at the time (to buy) and then she asked me to help her repark the car as she was new to driving and parking... I drove the car for about 5 min and loved the heavy steering and in the end drove the car sometimes. I bought that car from her a year later and got mega into BMWs. Test drove an audi and it was the steering that won me over in BMW. Got into E92, followed by E71 which drove amazing with AS and torque vectoring. Test drove F15 and was mega dissapointed. Car was a non m sport with professional suspension comfort i guess. Then a friend of mine assured me that with the m package they would address it, took AS as i got used to it (had no idea it was still hydraulic). Apart from the current car leaning a bit in the turns (with adaptive m suspension) the steering feel was great especially in sport mode (drivetrain in sport almost at all times). So now I truly hope they've improved something although there is little hope because nothing was announced and this isn't an official facelift. I thought about getting RR sport but after seeeing the reviews of the infotainment and head up display (new feature on RR sport just released and it already looks five years behind BMW) i knew i would not be into it. Plus RR sport is a heavy car so the comparable engine just doesn't pull as good... Mercedes version of the X5 is mega oudated inside and i dislike it. Heard XC90 has clatter inside and it does not appeal me that much. So I'm counting on you BMW...

I'm seeing Active Steering as an option on the 2017 X5 order guide I just got from my dealer. Option #217 for $1550 - Not available on the sDrive 35i and 40e however.
