programming used key

May be already covered in previous posts but i didn't find.
So, son lost the key from our 2016 x5. Can I buy used key and program by following the procedure or it works only for new key?

I don't care about mechanical key insert.

Thanks

You can get a replacement mechanical key insert for less than $40 cut at the dealer. Sorry don't know about the electronic side.

ok, I got 2 remotes from the bay and tried to program them.....no luck. Followed the procedure and nothing.

I even checked the battery stauts and part # - all match with original remote but couldn't program them. End of my experiment.

I'm told the dealer does not reprogrammed used keys, but for some reason you need all the keys reprogrammed, they have a system that can redo all the keys. Not sure if it's technical thing, but to get a third key i ended up just ordering a new one.

Also, not even sure how a key is lost these days since you can't get into the car without it...

My last order was $350 inclusive of getting the key cut and programmed, eligible for BMW CCA discount
