I find Wolfgang Über Wheel cleaner to be great, and at the right price.

I've been Sonax full effect wheel cleaner with great results on all of my vehicles. It sprays on neon green and turns a deep red/purple when it reacts with the brake dust so you see it working. It also cleans off the brake calipers really nicely too.

Wolfgang is similar. Sprays clear, turns purple as it reacts.

I second the Sonax recommendation. Good stuff.

I was told by a wheel repair guy to avoid most wheel cleaners as they are too harsh. He recommended simple green.

+1. I've used Sonax and "coincidentally" started to see rust forming on the center area of the rotors where you bolt on the wheels.

Rust would form regardless. My E90 never saw any wheel cleaners till couple years ago, and it rusted after 2 years of ownership.

well when you read the bottle of some wheel cleaners and it tells you to rinse it off within 30 seconds, those chemicals must be pretty harsh.

I use the BMW branded wheel cleaner. It works well and is reasonably priced at my local dealer(they sell it for a buck or two over their cost).

The back looks even more ridiculous.

But it's technically speaking a X5M... just the diesel version.

Another vote for Sonax. I use the 'full effect' and the stronger version, 'plus'.
