Was driving east on I-4 through Orlando today with my wife and we heard a huge POP at 75MPH! As some of you may know, I-4 in Orlando right now is a complete disaster with the 10 year improvement going on. I first thought I might have popped the bead seal with all of the uneven pavement and holes everywhere, but check out the photo. It must have been a piece of steel rebar! I can put my index finger in the hole! Anyway, just seconds after the pop, you could feel the backend sink, tire lost all air and the warning light came on. Thankfully these were run flats. I was able to maintain control and drive another 3 miles to get off of the interstate. CRAZY!!!
Just thought you guys would like to hear a success story about the run flats even though we all complain about the cost, noise and ride. In the end, they did a terrific job in getting me off of the road safe! |

This is why I keep my RFT..
I've been in a blowout before moving at high speeds... crashes are deadly.

Since I drive through remote areas when visiting the outlaws, I trust my spare wheel/tire over an RFT.

RFTs could be better but overall not bad especially on the safety point of view.
I've found that the large the wheel the better the ride. I was on 18"/19" RFTs on a 4 series last week and the ride was definitely harder and more unforgiving than my current 21" RFTs.

Run flats have come a long way. My first 3 series BMW with run flats was like driving on hemorrhoids in all 4 corners.
Now, they have gotten better. Much better. But I still very much prefer the road and steering feel of non-runflats. Every time I switch back to my winter setup (non-RFT), I think to myself ... DAMN. This is so good. |
