I removed it all the way back and just used the OEM caps on the coolant manifold.

I am starting to purchase the pieces to get this done and would like to get a DOC CAT to reduce the diesel smell and maybe dampen the high pitched idle whine. I'm not familiar with exhaust so I apologize if this is dumb question.
1) Can the existing DOC CAT be used? Is there a modification required e.g. welding any unused holes closed? 2) If the existing one can't be reused, can any DOC CAT be used? There is a big range in price. 3) Is there a recommendation for the DOC CAT? 4) Is there an residual resale value for the pieces that are going to be removed? 5) Can you confirm this is the list of things I need to purchase: a. Downpipe $350 USD on the Ebay link b. DOC CAT (assuming I have to buy one) $130 CDN on Amazon with title "4" Inlet/Outlet Universal Fit Catalytic Converter For Truck Diesel High Flow Cat Stainless Steel". c. EGR Blanking Kit. $100 CDN on Ebay. d. ECU Tune. $1100 USD from Malone Tuning according to this thread. Can't this simply be done through ISTA-D? |

I spoke to the ebay person and he also has a 200 cel CAT that can come with the unit. I have read that CAT for diesel is different. What questions should i ask him to make sure it works with my X5 35d?

He says it is a universal 200 CEL high flow CAT for both petrol and diesel. However, I have been reading that the diesel oxidation cat is different inside, so I am inclined to buy just the downpipe and a separate DOC to clamp on. (I'm not sure i trust the statement that the CAT is universal between the diesel and petrol exhasut.) Buying it as pieces will also help if the fit isn't exact since I can use regular pipe and couplings to make it fit. I really don't want to have the smell.
If anyone can recommend a DOC, I would appreciate it. I see many options from Magnaflow but none for the X5; I assume that any will do as long as the pipes are compatible sizes. (Please respond if it is not true.) The downstream pipe will be the OEM size of 2.75 inches. |

Sorry for all of the questions but I am learning lots through this forum. The instructional video in this first page is very good. Can someone validate the solution for what I am trying to accomplish:
1) Reduce risk of expensive maintenance caused by clogged intakes. 2) Increased torque. 3) No diesel smell. Based on what I have read, I can accomplish this using: a) EGR delete which can be done through coding (which then means I only have to deal with the normal exhaust. b) oil bypass filter to clean soot that might come back from DPF. c) ECU tune for more torque. The removal of the DPF & SCR seems to be time intensive and redundant if one was to add a DOC Catalytic to deal with the smell. (I would argue that the DOC Cat might add the same risk due to clogs and forced regeneration.) DPF & SCR accomplish the same thing, except perhaps a pain filling DEF and ensuring DPF regeneration. Isn't this correct? So, then the approximate cost of the solution is $500 for the oil bypass kit and a $850 for the tune. The reduced complications and substantially less time seem like the better option. |

Or if you have "good friends" who would risk their license to get you a pass. Or if you car registered out of state. Last edited by RED_Y_; 03-03-2021 at 03:26 PM.. |

For people that have deleted, what changes, if any, does this make to oil changes?
Still the same 3-ish recommended brands of diesel oil? Any changes to the miles interval between changes? Any changes to the oil weight? I've been deleted for about two years now and in that time the dealership has been doing my oil changes ( so I never gave this any thought), but the next one is going to be on my dime. |

I got my local mechanic to do the work. He said he does this alot but recommended hollowing out the scr, def and letting the coding disable the EGR. His rationale was that I will likely drive the X5 until it is dead and there's not alot of resellers North of Toronto for the parts. $600 cad. He also said the mufflers can stay in place to remove the whine because they are not so restrictive that soot will build up. This will also fool emissions testing since everything looks the same and they would only check for check engine lights if it can't back.
I opted for the dudmd stage 2 tune which was fast and the service is responsive. The application asked for cycling the engine during the remote setup but Dmitriy didn't tell me to. He just paused a few minutes and kept going. The power is better than my tuning box and the torque meter goes up to 560 now. I'll keep you posted every once in a while as I get more mileage on my tune. |

Those can both be eliminated and capped off with factory caps. I just removed everything like that back to the original source, which is that main diverter. This diverter is where coolant splits 4-5 different directions. The caps for these are OEM block off caps, which snap over the open holes after the lines are removed. If I remember correctly you use three different sizes of caps, but 4 total block off caps to complete the job. Two of one size, and one of each of the other two.
