X5 x50i air intake box
This is a picture of the X5M airbag filters. Does anyone have a pic of the x50i to post and compare? Looks like an easy retrofit if the M is better.

i have taken pictures of it before.....looks almost identical with the only difference being the Filter model... same paper type filter but they are more oblong and not squared off...

lower box meaning the actual air filter housing? that would mean that the intake diameter is probably different and the intake to turbo pipes or whatnot must be larger...

Yes. And the pipe to turbo part numbers are different. Lower box must be larger for the larger air filters. Front inlet is the same and is in a great location. Look at the 550 n63tu airbox. Very bad.

not knocking the stock intake design for our 50is....very simple, yet very effective in its intent.
but BMW did not intend for us to tune, exhaust and increase power, so more air always helps...just thinking if K and N or others can design freer flowing filters with more surface area thats all im interested in...still wish we could get some turbo noise tho

Can not tell from the pictures.....does the filter have the same plastic cover on the bottom of the filter like the top of the filter ? Only a side breather ?

I'd love to see an aftermarket intake for my 35d...

Obviously the filters are just one element in the retrofit. With the wider intakes, the pipes need to be larger and more important, the air mass element would need to be replaced to compensate for more air and air flow.
If it was only $60 bucks, I would sign up now |

Yes, but if the intake manifold, VGT, variable cam strategy and cams, head flow, and so on are different on the M5, then the intake is a moot point. It's like putting a larger funnel on the same size garden hose.
It would be interesting to know what CFM the M5 consumes versus the 4.6L. Since the 35d has an EGR, a cold air intake is a complete waste of money as it cannot improve anything above an idle.

I checked and the air mass meter is the same for both models. One thing that kind of confuses me is the opening of the intake on the filters. If ours are smaller and the X5M is larger wouldn't it make sense that there is a misfit somewhere, unless I'm not reading it correctly.

Mass air, lower box, upper lid(except for emblem), pipe inlet etc is identical in 50 and X5M.
They bolt right in. Just installed and drove 480 miles. (Btw, eco mode is almost a waste of mode at a highway cruise. 65-75 mph cruise was 22.9mpg on a 280 mile trip. Eco claimed an added 13 miles. Makes the X5 feel a little floaty to me). There is an indentation under the factory filter that they filled up with the larger X5M filter. |

So you notice any difference in throttle feel or sound with the new filters? Obviously it's not going to be significant but enough to do it anyway since its inexpensive?

I would do it again since I like to optimize systems.
"IF" , the smaller filters were a restriction, you're picking up 14% more flow per filter. 10hp max and possibly less. I can't feel or here that small of a change. I am going to test them for pressure drop next week to see if a custom media is needed for even greater flow in the X5M filter case. |
