Again, my assumption and it's only an assumption is that since I already have comfort seats I may have the ventilation and ductwork there already. That is the only way I would consider doing it

I wanted the ventilated seats but you had to get the entire package with Nappa leather (which I also wanted, but not in the colors they are offered in).

In order to have ventilated seats, one must add Premium Seating Package at least in Canada. In my wife's X5, I made sure that we got that because I personally think ventilated seats are a must in leather seats. I also added extended leather package to have the doors and dashboard wrapped in Nappa leather. It feels like the seats hug you with Nappa leather especially with adjustable side bolsters.

My wife and I agree with this point of view.

Nope, it's not there.

Seats are built to be either non-vented or ventilated as a unit, as there is so much different in the construction of the two types, from ducting, fans, seat foam, perforated leather panels in the seat covers, electrics etc,.

In what way do the ventilated seats suck? I live in Houston, TX and I assumed the ventilated seats were a mandatory option for myself.

I take a different view than Kzang as I like ventilated seats especially during a hot summer.

Less comfortable according to the research I did, people reporting they could feel the seat structure through the thin foam on the ventilated multi-contour. I sat in both before ordering, the non-ventilated felt like sitting on a memory foam mattress easily the most comfortable seat I ever sat in...that includes living room recliners.

I now have 850 miles on my X5 and my non-ventilated seats remain super comfortable. Mind you I have stress fractures in my spine, bone spurs, sciatic nerve getting pinched, right hip needs replacing and the left is falling apart. I can't even sit in my living room recliners anymore but I can drive the X5 for hours with pretty good comfort. The X5 seats were a huge decision factor for me vs many other SUV's I test drove.

Most of the complaints I've read about ventilated seats center around the fact it's not cold air coming from the seat. This, in my opinion, is due to misinformed buyers and/or unrealistic expectations.

In BMW ventilated seats is just that, VENTILATED, it is not cooled. It's ambient air blowing through the seat. In other brands, my wife's Chevy Tahoe for example, it is air conditioned air blowing through the seats and they call the option COOLED seats. Chevy actually has separate ac compressors in the seats that chill the air, BMW is just fans blowing cabin air through the seats.

So, if you're expecting nice chilled air on your tush, you will be disappointed. If you are wanting a feature that will turn your seat from blistering hot to comfortable in a short time and will keep you from sweating and sticking to the seat, BMW ventilated seats will do just fine. Another plus to BMW option is you can use them in the winter in tandem with your heated seat feature to blow warm air on your tush.

I'm also in Texas. Ventilated seats are a must. They keep my back cool, and for the reason only, won't have a car without it.

I wanted the ventilated seats, but after hearing negative experiences with their performance, I opted against them, especially since they carried an astronomical upgrade price. My F150 Platinum had them, and I loved them. Taking the heat off the leather on a hot day was great. In the middle of summer, I most often drove around with them on low, seemed to be perfect. Common feedback on the BMW solution was "don't waste your money."

sadly, I'm here because after a couple weeks owning my x5 with ventilated seats... I'm struggling to find comfort. wish I had read this before buying the car.. i like everything about it but the seats, which I bought the car because they had them. ugh. I've ordered this pad for the bottom.. hopefully that helps.

MC Seats

If a car has the MC seats *AND* ventilated, are they still uncomfortable b/c of the ventilation, or does the MC somehow improve the discomfort of ventilated seats that several people have experienced?

MC Vented seats have the hardware under the cushions which basically reduces the padding comfort of a comfort seat. Keep that in mind.

So does that mean that the ventilated seats may be a bit more comfortable b/c of the MC option? I agree that until someone drives it, it's very hard to tell. But enough people seem to not like the ventilated seats.

No, vented seats have less padding in the seat due to the extra hardware to allow ventilation.
Some don't feel the difference and some do.

I would guess the heavier you are the more you would probably feel the hardware pressing up on your butt.

Agrees, although they aren't the best out there, they do a good job imho. That, Napa and contour is a pretty damn good combo.
