Oil question

2015 X5 50i. Car gave me a message to add 2 quarts of oil last night and my nearest BMW dealer isn't super convenient for me to get to.

I have some Castrol Edge full synthetic 5w-30 left over from a prior car. It's not BMW LL compliant but I'm leaning towards throwing it in simply because the X5 is due for service in 3000 miles anyway (and I'll likely end up getting the service with 1,000 miles left on the countdown). At the rate I drive the car will be serviced in about 6 weeks. Temps in that period will be moderate (NE US). A couple of days in the 80's (F) but mostly something between 50F and 70F.

Anybody think this would be an issue? I figure the Castrol should be fine to run for such a short period? Also, I have zero intent of keeping this car for the long haul. It'll be gone once the cpo period is over in 3-4 years with something less than 100k miles on the odometer.

Or you could just go to the store and buy some Castrol. Buy 3. 2 to put in the oil hole and one to put in the trunk. Then you always have an extra liter. Or you could put 1 liter of your 5-30 in now, which might be good enough, then buy 2 liters, one for the oil hole and the other for the trunk. In either case, I would just add 1 bottle and wait a day or two before adding the second to make sure it's really needed.

Just to close this one down in case the topic comes up again via search.

I checked with the people on the BITOG forums (Bob is the oil guy) - a population quite into the technical specific of motor oil. Consensus is that it's fine to use the non-compliant oil for such a short period of time. There should be zero issues.

Wrong oil is better than no oil!
