I see, so it's when somebody appends the X5 badge with ///M to purposely create the illusion that their car is an X5///M. But the ///M badge on it's own is okay?

The difference between ///M Performance and ///M is a little blurry, somebody needs to create an official thread on the topic. "The first rule of ///M Club is..."
Lol!

I blame BMW for this issue. They shouldn’t have named the M-Sport line “M-Sport” and they shouldn’t have put ///M all over the car. They had the Modern Line and continue to have the Luxury Line and the only way you can tell these difference lines are by the options in the car. They should have just made the M-Sport the Sport Line without all the ///M badges all over the car.

Idk what they were thinking in using the same badge for M-Sport vehicles as a M car. Even to try and justify it by saying M-Sport cars have ///M Performance. They still don’t perform like true M cars.

With all that being said if BMW puts 10 ///M badges on a M-Sport vehicle is it really so wrong if the owner adds a couple more. Because according to the auto manufacturer “BMW” this badge ///M belongs on M-Sport vehicles as well as true M cars. To this persons defense he/she still has the 35i emblem on the vehicle, so they may have a X-Drive 35i M-Sport and wanted to add one more badge...idk. Although by putting it right next to the X6 and it not being a true M car does look pretty bad…haha!

As for me, I own a couple M-Sport vehicles, but I wouldn't dare purchase a ///M badge and stick it anywhere on my vehicles.

Anyway, like we always say when we see ///M on non true M cars. To the average person they don’t know or even care about the ///M badge…

One can add more M badges if they wish but once you cross the line by adding badges in places where it only comes on higher end models then its perceived to be misleading. Its not ok to change your Merc E350 badge to say E550 or E63 so its not ok to add a ///M badge in the trunk lid.

Its pretty sad that someone would spend 70K on a car and feel like they need to slap on a $50 badge to mislead the public they have a 100K car.

one should never add "more M badges" anywhere. Don't even go there. Don't.

What happens if you add AMG in front of X6 M? How much more value are we talking about?

This is not just BMW who do this.
Mercedes have the AMG line trim with badges plastered on their models.

I have the M50d and have no doubts its what I paid for - tuned by M Sport but obviously not an X5M.
I have paid a premium for this and yes the car is covered in M50d logos but I'm not ashamed of it.

I agree that someone who puts an M badge on a non M tuned vehicle may have a complex about not owning a true M sport vehicle

I'm wondering the same. The ones out in the market either have the x5m badge or xdrive.

I wouldn't do it personally but some see it as "customizing" by doing so. Adding it on your windshield, roof, hood, bumpers isn't imitating or misleading, just poor taste

Thats a tricky one. When i thought about adding it to my x5 35i i was going to black out the ///M part or the whole thing adding some other logo there.

While some can say that is "posing" to me the fender vents isn't a trademark M attribute. Having it in the back trunk lid is.

I wouldn't see a X5 on the road with the X5M vents as a poser. I know the vents are made for the X5M and there isn't any easy option to not have the logo so for some they just leave the badge alone. Its different when someone goes out of their way to purchase the ///M badge and slap it on the trunk. The logo doesn't make the car look any better and its only function is meant to mislead.

I'm also thinking these are not enthusiast that slap the M badge on.. i was recently at the dealer, an older gentleman (60s) had a M badge on his regular X5.. they were no mods on his truck.. Maybe they don't know the true meaning of the "M" badge.
Recently on my road trip to Florida, a young college student (girl) had an M badge on her 328 at the gas station.. and now they are also some young teenage kids that does it also..so i really don't think they trying to deceive anyone, they just trying to style their car. An enthusiast would know not to do that.

On the side vents, mine came with the X5M logo, i use vinyl and cover the M.. IMO the vents its self looks great on a White truck.. but i'm even skeptical on even using the M colors anywhere.

What if it really is an M and the owner just retrofitted it to make it look like the 35i.

Joke would totally be on you!

Lol! "Down-badging" I love it!!!

I was planning to remove the X5 logo on the rear, but now I am considering just replacing it with an X3 logo!

Or how about an X1M badge on the rear, you would definitely have some X5/X5M owners doing a double-take! And the 0-60 time would actually be pretty accurate.

Edit: But then we would have to change the title of the thread to "How to decrease the value of your X by $40k"

What about those of us over this side of the Pond that just remove the "50d" from our rear badge-wear? Is that OK?

No, that's not OK whatsoever. It would just say X5 M at that point. Either leave it the way it is, or remove the badge altogether.

I'm thinking of doing "MX5M, xDrive50iM" to increase the value even more.
