I've lived in the US for over a decade. I can count two hands the amount of times I've seen incorrect rear fog light usage.

That's because very very few manufacturers provide them to the US market. If they did, then we would see incorrect usage on a daily basis.

As a child my parents solely owned Mercedes-Benz thru the 70s and up to the mid 80s. They all had rear fog lights.

And they still do in Europe, but not in the US anymore.

Today I checked the wire harness from the vehicle to the xenon headlight and it is the same as the led headlight. Is the coding the only thing required to make them work or do the wire connections have to be moved around?

So I'm assuming you mean the connector to the headlight is the same. Have you obtained a wiring diagram to see if the wires actually go to the same place?

If the ECUs are the same, then my guess would be that the wires do, but I would confirm before plugging anything in. If all the hardware matches up, then it should just come down to programming. I would think that BMW would keep as much as they can the same as it simplifies production and support down the road with replacement parts.

This is all speculation of course.

You'll be the first as far as I know; you should do a DIY thread on it.

i didn't understand the benefits rear fog lights until I was in a rain storm on the highway and the Mini on front of me had them activated. The spray kicked up from the rear tires basically masked the taillights of the Mini. The lighting conditions were also quasi-dark and the color of the car matched the gray spray. The only thing that indicated where the car actually was those rear fogs.

I activate my rear fogs on my M3 when it's raining and foggy now.
