Driven both extensively, never got the spirited driving feeling with the rover that the 50i gives. Also I dont find the off road features that compelling.

I looked at both and test drove the Range Rover Sport back to back with the X5. Handling and performance-wise the X5 wins hands down. If I lived in an area where I needed real 4x4 off road performance of course I’d have gone with the RR but for me, always driving on tarmac, the X5 was easily the best choice!

I do wish my X5 has a full height adjustable air suspension set up to help with entry / exit and loading like the RR...

Yes the 50i is a real beast..I should've specified the 50i vs the Range on this topic..but again the body on the Range do looks bulkier bigger and wider than the X5 in every way

I have had 3 Full Size Range Rovers (2 Supercharged and 1 HSE) and one Supercharged Sport. Most current Range Rover was a 2014 Full Size (current body) and the oldest was a 2006 Sport. 2008 Full Size was the HSE. 2011 and 2014 Full Size were Supercharged.

I am on X5 #7 (all kinds...3.0, 4.8, 4.8is, 4.4i, 35d).

X5 handles better and for sure feels much sportier and stuck to the road!

Besides a Rolls-Royce though, nothing is as plush and has such a "magic carpet" ride as a Full Size Range Rover. It is supreme luxury. I love my current X5 and all my past X5s....but a Range Rover will make an X5 feel plasticky and "Entry level".

Besides a Mercedes G-Class or Land Cruiser.....a Range Rover is one of the world's most capable off roader too. This translates to ultimate security and safety with day to day driving.

If BMW can improve the next X5's HVAC and make the interior feel more upscale, then I will get the next gen. X5. If not, I will 1000% get a new Full Size Range Rover!

BUT....let's not forget a Full Size Range Rover HSE or Supercharged is more expensive than an X5 50i and a Supercharged or Autobiography is even much more expensive than an X5M! BMW X5 is a helluva bargain!!

X5 can only reall be compared to the Range Rover sport. Comparing it with the full size is just pointless. Two totally different cars. I think the newer supercharged Range Rover sport is superior to any X5 including the X5M. Now the SVR...that's a different animal.
