2017 X5 diesel production delays?

Hi peoples...

Does anyone have any information regarding the production date of the 2017 x5 diesel models? Our dealership says they're delayed with no word on production start dates.

In the past and historically, there has always been delays with diesel production due to EPA withholding certification pending review.

I had ordered a 2017 x5 diesel yesterday but today my sales guy called to say BMW is not currently planning on bringing the diesel X5 into the US market. Geesh.

That wouldn't be such a good thing for BMW. Are you sure the sales guy is not misinformed...?

Well, if that's true I don't have to worry about my "buyout or lease another" decision next May. The decision will be "buyout or lease" something without a Roundel. Too bad if true. The X5 35d is by far the best utility vehicle I've ever owned.

X5 diesels are coming, but it may take a while. BMW has confirmed that X5d and X3d production as well as import of 3 and 5 Series diesels will be delayed until the feds give them the green light. Same thing happened last year with 2016 X5s after the Volkswagen scandal broke, but eventually the feds cleared the X5s.

No telling how long it will take them this time. It's out of BMW's control and up to the EPA.

The current Roundel has an article on the diesels and said BMW is discontinuing the current diesel engines and replacing them with a new inline 6, first appearing in the 2016 7 series -- but not in the US yet.

They expect the new diesel engine to be coming to the X5 eventually. The specs are impressive.

The article wasn't specific to the 2017 X5 and if it would still get the old diesel.

If they could wait till the things are reliable. Would be a boost. My 13 D was far from
a defect free SUV.

My dealer got me one of the last 2016 X5 diesel build slots. Problem solved.

Nice! I'm assuming you don't really care about the new additions and changes to the 2017 models?

My2016 Msport+DHP, Space Grey+Mocha Nappa X5 diesel went into production for delivery in the middle of August. I don't care about the new "touch screen" and Apple iPlay on the 2017 model (I don't use an iPhone).

Perhaps BMW is benefiting from the stop-sale that VW/Audi had and the recall with no resolution in sight.

The outgoing engine was from the X5M50d and M550d which was not available in the U.S. market. So the replacement quad turbo engine referred to will not be coming here. At least not for the remaining years of the F15 chassis X5's

WASHINGTON — The 2017 BMW 328d sedan, 328d Sports Wagon and the X3 xDrive28d and X5 xDrive35d SUVs are facing a delayed debut at BMW dealerships until the EPA certifies them for sale in the U.S.

The EPA is cracking down on all makers of diesel vehicles in the wake of the ongoing Volkswagen diesel-emissions crisis. The federal agency wants to make sure that all diesel models for sale here meet the requisite emission standards.

"At this point, we're working to get these cars to market," said BMW spokesman Hector Arellano-Belloc in a phone conversation with Edmunds on Wednesday.

When asked what advice he'd give to impatient car shoppers, Arellano-Belloc said: "Hang on tight."

He added: "Unfortunately, as of today, we don't have any confirmation of when this process will finish, but there's no indication our vehicles won't meet the standards."

An EPA spokesperson told Edmunds that the agency doesn't confirm the status of preproduction vehicles until manufacturers introduce them into commerce to respect any potential confidential business information.

"It is true that diesel vehicles are getting extra scrutiny and that has extended the certification process longer than normal," the EPA said in a statement. "In general, manufacturers have been supportive of this additional testing and have adjusted their timing to account for the additional test duration."

I was at my dealer today, and my sales rep mirrored the OP's comments, basically stating they have no line of sight to 2017 X5 diesels.

yes, they will sell through 2020 providing they get approval then they will shift focus to their e-tron vehicles. knowing audi and my experience with them i am willing to bet you a steak dinner they will not offer them after 2020. they already pulled the TDI option for the B9 A4 (see link below). Only a matter of time before they do it for the rest of the models.

I've ordered and purchased two X5 Diesels in 2013 (model 2014) and in 2015 (model 2016)...
in both scenarios production did not start sooner than Dec with Jan delivery.
a few reasons, if EPA needs to approve a new emission test/regulation,
as well as filling the back log of current years' orders before they switch onto next year....
