2017 X5 XDrive35d
Has anyone heard any updates whether/when the 2017 X5 xDrive35d (Diesel) will be available in the US? Someone had posted an article that the BMW Diesels have finally been approved for sale in the US. I called my dealer and he said he was told that they won't be available until 2018.
Any updates out there? Also, I've never owned a diesel car before. I'd also appreciate any advice in terms of maintenance that is different from regular gasoline cars. I had read things about refilling urea traps while the VW emissions scandal was going on. Thanks! |

Yes, if the engine comes with the adblue system, it needs to be refilled now and then.
The exhaust system is a lot more complicated than in gasoline engines. I'm struggling with failed thermostats on my 2016 F15 that caused EGR failures and most likely already sooted up the particle filter quite bad. Neither of these things are fun to replace or clean. I'm afraid Ill have to deal with these kind of things as long as I own this vehicle, as it all started within months. |

Really, the maintenance isn't that different. I've got a 35d, and I've never had to top off the DEF between oil changes (16K intervals - don't worry, I'm in Canada). I'll be going to a shorter interval now that my "free" oil changes are done, just had my last one in July. The thing I've always found with diesels is they need to stretch their legs. If your drive to work, or standard commutes are short little city jaunts, a diesel probably isn't for you.

I drive 2 miles to/from work daily and have 12K + miles on my 3d. Why is it stated that they need to be driven longish distances?

Not allowing the engine to reach operating time and sustain that temp for a period of time can lead to a wealth of issues. In only 2 miles, your vehicle is barely getting warm. On a commute that short, you're really not seeing the benefits of owning a diesel in my opinion. Diesels need to warm up achieve optimal efficiency. In all honesty, anything you drive that short a distance will be negatively affected by it - regardless of it being gas or diesel. Just make sure that you regularly stretch it's legs and you should be ok.

For that distance, I would consider the 40e. My wife has a similar commute and we have yet to do our first fill up! We recieved the car late June!
