Thanks for all of the info here. (i'm new) So are the Cont. ExtremeContact DWS's Runflats? do they have Tire Pressure Monitor? I'm considering just putting a set of 20" tires on my existing wheels for 1000$ + install vs $3000 for the quoted BMW 18" winter package my dealer was trying to sell me.

I know there are other options out there for 3rd party rims and non-runflats at places like tire rack for like $1500, my concern is that the car is pretty heavy being a Diesel (35d), is it "safe" to ride on a $1500 setup for 6 months of winter after the ride I've enjoyed since May (got this 2013 X4 as preowned them) with my Summer tires on there? I don't know much about this stuff so any add'l input would be much appreciated.

DWS I ordered are not run flats and not sure if they offer run flat versions. I ordered spare tire option because of this.

Turbotoy4me, quick question, what wheels are you getting, factory BMW 19's or 3rd party?

thanks in advance

dualbmr, I am going with the 449 style BMW 19" winter tire and wheel package. In part because I like the look and they come complete with sensors, tires, wheels ready to go. Since I ordered the car at CO's everything will be in one place.
Please let m know what you decide to do.

I was told the 449 cold weather wheel package is sold out for the season. Where and when did you buy the tire/wheel/tpms package?

SUV55, I was initially told I could get them in a week. I just got an email from my CA a telling me 2-4 weeks.
So I guess I will be looking for wheels at Discount and Tire Rack unless they get them soon. My 20" high performance set up will be worthless in the snow. I will let you know more tomorrow once I talk to my CA again.

what price did they quote you for 19"'s in NY they are saying $3000 for winter package on 18"'s. my guess is it's more like $3500. it's certainly more convienent to just have BMW do it but the price is +1200 more than spec.'d out on tirerack with Tire Pressure monitors, add in the mounting at a local shop for $60 total in you're still looking at a considerable difference.

anybody here gone through a couple of seasons with the 3rd party tire rack rims (18" or 19") on a heavier X5 35Diesel? just curious if my concern that they aren't as strong or solid is something to be considered?

thanks

My BMW dealer quoted me the $3100 from the accessory website. They do have some coupons I can use for 15% off at the time of purchase. I hope to go with the 449 if they can get them or 18's. The 20's will not work for me once the snow flies here.

I just ordered a '15 X5 with the 20" Summer Tires. Looking at those 449 wheels with the 19" Pirelli Scorpion Run Flat package too for the winter. I hope they are not sold out for the season already! Like the poster above I have a BMW savings card that has not been used so can get 15% plus my dealer is showing a $100 rebate. This is about $570 off the package of $3150. So $2600 or so plus 7% sales tax in NJ.

Another dealer has buy 3 get 1 free up to $200 off. Unfortunately this is not the dealer I have the service discount card for.

I should also look around and see if anyone has a used tire/wheel combo with some tread left for sale (if you do and are in the NJ area PM me!)

For my '12 X5M I ordered the staggered 20" Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snow run flats. Will swap them with my wheels each season. Local tire place does it for $120 for the set so even if I do it for 3 years it is still less than getting dedicated 19 or 20 wheels ($240/yr to swap 2x - winter - summer)

FYI, Pirelli scorpion Ice and Snow have been discontinued and being replaced by the Pirelli winters. The only availability for Ice and Snow is based on active stock. The Pirelli Winters RFT's (not sure about non-rft) are on 60-90 day back order from the factory so getting. I just bought new winters and went with Blizzaks lm25 because that was the only RTF's avaliable. My tire guy called the tire companies to find what was avaliable.

Ok. I was wondering why I was seeing some "Winters" and the "Ice & Snow". Wasn't sure what the difference was there. Sounds like just the newest model with new naming nomenclature.

60 to 90 days would suck as that puts them almost to February! At that point it makes little sense. What is Pirelli thinking with their inventory management? They do realize winter starts around now, don't they?

Is it possible to use my wheels and winter tires from my retired 2006 X5 3.0 on my 2015 X5 35d ? One bmw dealer told me they won't fit , while another dealer said that they just might fit, and to try them to confirm , as the bolt pattern is the same but have to make sure they clear rotars.

I am pretty sure that the bolt patter is spot in because all BMW's have the same bolt patter. The hub and offset would be the variable. Offset can be fixed with spacers but I do not know what f15 offsets are so I am not sure

fwiw, I just drove my Scorpions in the snow for the first time. 25*, 3" of snow on the ground, roads are packed snow and ice. Very slick. I'm seeing 2 wheel drive cars spinning their tires trying to get across a flat intersection, creeping along at walking speed until they get up to speed. Roads that are normally 55 mph, people are driving at 25 or 30. Several cars in the ditch on my way to work. I'm happy with the tires. If it wasn't for everybody else out there, I would feel perfectly comfortable driving at near normal speeds. I could make my DSC light flicker if I really gave it some gas, but for the most part, never broke traction while driving relatively consertively. And when I say relatively conservatively, I'm talking about compared to normal driving on dry roads. I did find a parking lot where I could try a little drifting. Turned off traction control and did a few doughnuts and figure eights. Not as elegant as can be done in a rear wheel drive car, but still fun. I'm perfectly satisfied with the Scorpions. As I expected, they are obviously head and shoulders above other vehicles with all weather tires, or whatever kind of tire people are trying to drive around with out there.

For the first winter, I decided to stick with the 19" Goodyear LS2 all seasons that came with the X5 and I was pretty impressed with the traction driving around the city.

For those shopping for winter tires, you have to understand that there are two major categories for winter tires - Performance Winter/Snow and Studless Ice and Snow. Though they are both winter tires, they behave differently.

Most BMW OEM Cold Weather Package has Performance Winter/Snow tires equipped, usually Continental ContiWinterContact TS Sport

For the F15 X5 I would recommend a set of Performance Winter/Snow, the studless ice and snow is a little over the top (unless you live in a rural snowy area)

Anyone notice tire pipe resonance with the Conti DWS on staggered 20's between 25 and 30 mph? It sounds like wind traveling through a flute...WhOooOooOoo.... It is on the subtle side.

The tires are over all fairly quite with no tire vibration.
I just got them mounted so hopefully with some break in and the resonance will resolve.
